Yeah, the MS3 is FWD, but it's very balanced, lighter than MS6 and a very well tuned FWD setup, so it does outperform the MS6. And I hear that the ratings Mazda released on the MS3 are actually lower than real numbers because they couldn't have a lower priced car beating the 6, at least not officially.
3 is actually a pretty good car space-wise. It's not all that much smaller than the 6 on the inside, especially in that hatchback where you have tons of cargo space on demand.

Besides that, the Mazdaspeed6 isn't an AWD in the same sense a Subaru is; It's normally a FWD with the ability to invoke the rear wheels on demand, much like VW's 4Motion.
And on top - unless you're dealing with really adverse weather, I doubt - as someone with a fair experience with high performance driving - that the average buyer of these cars will know which one is AWD and which isn't, especially when the AWD isn't permanent and both are likely to be equipped with state-of-the-art electronic stability programs.
I agree they are very different cars, probably, but I could see how an average joe will debate between them. I mean, when you need a family sedan with lots of horsepower, both can work for you. The MS6 is far from an STi. There is a difference between an N/A 3.0L V6 240HP vs a turbo 2.3L I-4 270HP+. The turbo would be faster even if it only made 240HP. The other thing to keep in mind is that the MS6 isn't just a Mazda6 with turbo strapped on. The transmission, drivetrain, suspension, and everything else has been ugpraded to keep with the performance characteristics of the vehicle. The Accord is no such beast.
BTW, if you want something to drive every day, fun, quick and frugal, try a VW GTI with the DSG 'box. It's probably much more fun than either one, I really like the interior and the handling. Great car.

This isn't quite true. The MS3 is horribly overpowered for its FWD setup. In fact, the first 3 gears are wheelspin city even with the computer reducing boost through those gears. It's this lack of traction, this difficulty in hooking up, that causes it to not get the better numbers. Too bad they couldn't have made it RWD, it would be have made for a great old-skool-style Japanese hatch.

Where the heck have you read that? Yes it is FWD, yet Mazda has a great computer controlled program that harnesses torque steer, so no what you say is the opposite of what the rave reviews have said.
The only other real bad thing is that one, it is a hatchback (blahh), and the shifter is spongy (although some say it is precise).

I've driven one. There's almost no torque steer. That's not what I was talking about it. It doesn't hook up well. It's wheelspin city unless you launch it just right and it does reduce the max boost in the lower gears to try to reduce wheelspin. Shifter was typical fantastic Mazda, almost as good as a Miata. I like the hatchback.
