My brother is moving out at the end of the month and is taking his D-Link G wireless router with him. I was never a big fan of it, and I've been doing some research and I think I'm going to buy a WRT54GS. I won't necessarily be using the Speedbooster, but it's supposed to be a better router, hardware-wise, than the WRT54G.

Here's a link to the WRT54GS spec page.

Do you have this router? If so, what do you think of it? I just want a reliable wireless router that gives me stable connections.

I'm probably going to put in the lastest version of the HyperWRT firmware.

Also, I will probably buy three Linksys PCI G Speedboost wireless cards for my desktops. Are there any other cards I should look at?

I have the WRT54g and it's a wonderful router. Fast, cheap, stable and feature laden. I use the Sveasoft Alchemy firmware. They do charge $20 for it but I think it's a great price for all the features they have built into it.

The only difference between the WRT54G and WRT54GS is that the latter has twice the ROM and RAM. All WRT54Gs after revision 2 are capable of Speedbooster with hacked firmware.

Great Router!. You'll probably get very short disconnects using the HyperWRT firmware, as I and one other person I know who tried it has. I'm using WRT54G_Wolf_W42_Alchemy_6rc1_by_TheIndividual firmware from the site listed below. Works great! Have read a warning that turning up the juice on the signal strength may cause dammage, but doubling default should be safe, and improved speed by 1.5x for me. I'd like to hear more feedback on this issue. There's also a hacked firmware for kai if you happen to have an xbox. This allows you to run kai from the router and not need a computer hooked up running it to play system link games online for free. Unfortuneatly the kai firmware doesn't have any of svea's cool features.

Violation of GPL?

So Sveasoft is the way to go? Paying $20 isn't a big deal in light of the benefits of the aftermarket firmware :)

The WRT54GS is only ten bucks more than the WRT54G, so I might as well get it. Are Linksys Speedboost cards a good match? I've had such trouble with D-Link and Netgear cards and connection issues, just from their respective software apps.

There is free svea firmware out there too. the 20$ is suposedly for a year of support.
I just set up a pair of them doing WDS between an office with the broadband connection and the home about 200 feet away. I was getting 18mbps rate, which is quite good for the distance.
The slave router worked great, and a computer connected to it got it's IP address from the master router just fine.
