currently we only have network admins and want to create a network engineer position. Does anyone have a good job description they wouldn't mind sharing? Salary ranges would be good too. I'm looking for a good one that normally gets posted on a company intranet, not the cheesy ones on job sites.

Thanks

(these types of threads are great because they help justify my neffing all day)

Stark - I'd suggest typing in Network Engineer in Monster and basically averaging/copying a few of those bad boys. :)

The NE in many companies is different - in some companies, they're literally Network Admins with a diff. title, required to be a MCSE, CCNP, knows Novell, TCP/IP, Print Servers, (AIX, Windows, etc), etc. Some companies they're just first line support for network admins, usually MCP/MCSE, CCNA, lower level.

all the ones i'm finding are one paragraph and not very comprehensive. I suppose I could combine a bunch... but I'd really like to know what real companies are expecting and paying for the position.

no, i'm a network admin. another one of the admins wants to become a network engineer because that's what he spends most of his time doing. to do this, he needs a full job description to submit to the VP.

admins have to deal with users, engineers don't. capice?

wow, just wow.

A network engineer is one who does the actuall engineering of network communication system. They should possess an expert level knowledge of the following:
TCP/IP
OSI model
routing protocols
layer2/3 switching
WAN protocols
TDM and optical multiplexing
quality of service
voice, video, multicast
network security
Network design best practices (tiered design, address space design and summarization, redundancy, etc)

typically requires 4 year EE or CS degree and 5+ years experience with building network systems.

They typically don't touch operating systems nor do they want to (ie, no servers or PCs...that's for the tech folks) and do very little "support".

then maybe bump to 9 years.

It all depends. The "title" can mean very different things. But to me to be called a network engineer that is what you need. Engineer is not a term to be thrown around. Searching monster is the best approach.

I agree that the term "engineer" is often used where not apropriate, especially in IT.

Having no college experience, and unlikely to make the effort at this point, I would hate to think that the title of "network engineer" is unacheivable.

I've been a Network Technician / Analyst for the past 5+ years, and I hope that if I work hard at gaining experience and certification that in another 5 years I could become a fully fledged Network Engineer.

It might be more beneficial if you make a list of responsibilities for any potential applicants and then go from there...
