i pretty much buy most consoles at that price if i'm not too excited about the console itself like the dreamcast and gamecube.

My bet it when Xbox 2 or whatever is released in late 2005. Maybe before to clean out inventory.

Maybe not even then if MS can't make the Xbox2 emulate Xbox1 (rumor is they are trying but haven't managed it yet).

Backwards compatibility isn't a big deal. Something like 2% of PS2 users bought a PS2 and play their PS1 games on it. It might be when the system first launches, but as the library grows and support for the system does too, it becomes fast fading.

You must have missed that thread.

Way more than 2% of people have used the backwards compatibility. I for one have actually used it on a somewhat regular basis.

That was an arbitrary figure :p It still isn't as big a deal as one would think. I still plan on keeping at least 1 of my 2 XBox's when XBox 2 comes out - probably the modded one.

The point is that anyone wanting to play an existing Xbox game including Halo 1-2, SW:KOTOR 1-2, Evil Dead: Fistfull of Boomstick, etc. will need an Xbox1 to do it.

That means far fewer used Xbox1 consoles will be traded in, and that there will be higher demand for new consoles both for new buyers and people needing to replace a broken console to keep playing their game library.

Higher demand means no incentive to cut the selling price to dump inventory.

Microsoft sell a product for $99? Crazy. I think they will stop production before it hits that low. They are already losing money on every Xbox they sell (as in their selling price is lower than their production price).

You're using far too much economics 101. Historically speaking, among any new console launch, demand for the old console drops immediately and continues to drop. It's not going to remain steady like you seem to be implying. I don't even see why you're bringing up economics on a situation in which if you look back at any console launch, that's not the case. The only way demand for the old console goes up is if supply for the new one runs out and people (especially during Christmas) need something to buy their kid.

Simply put, once a new console comes out or is announced, demand for the old one drops because people begin to wait for the new one. MS and Sony had no reason to drop their respective system to $99 during Christmas because supply was low, demand was high. Once they announce their respective new systems around E3, everyone is going to get geared up towards the new system - developers, gamers, etc. Demand for old system goes down.

That's retarded. Microsoft lost money on the console even at the original launch price of $299, in which they lost approx. $100 on every console then. Dropping it to $99 isn't going to matter, when the majority of video game revenue comes from accessories and profit off games.

Ah, but production of Xbox1 will be cut, possibly down to just enough for warranty service, since Microsoft loses money on each unit sold.

Yes, demand will drop but so will supply.

You can't compare Xbox2 launch to the PS2 launch since the PS2 did offer full PS1 emulation, so the supply of PS1 units actually increased: new PS2 and PS1 units, plus all the used PS1 units being dumped by upgraders.

Alright, I see your point. However, I think shimsham owned us both:

when the PS2 does

We can argue about economics vs history all day long, but when one drops the price, the other pretty much follows. I'm willing to bet money if MS dropped it to $99, Sony would too, and vice versa.

Microsoft has lost billions on their X-Box division. It's not uncommon to sell a system for less than it costs to produce, then make up the difference by selling games, but Microsoft hasn't made up the difference.

I tried it when I first got my PS2...but then quit because Playstation games just looked so crappy compared to their PS2 counterparts

the xbox/2 needs a handle. People transport it often enough that it would make it so much more convenient.
