Anyone have a good treatment for Cold Sores??

Since I'm sure I'm not the only one around here that gets these, just thought I would find out what some of you do to deal with them. I have tried Zovorax (sp?), Denovir, and taking Lysine pills, all of which seem to help, but none of them seem to be incredibly effective. Anyone have a sure-fire way of getting rid of them or keeping them away?

If you're talking about an external cold sore on your lip then I have found the perfect product. I bought some cold sore stuff from my local GNC for $5 I think, I believe it's called or has Lysine in it. At first I was skeptical but after using it for 3 days my cold sore was almost gone, by the 4th day it had virtually disappeared. I rarely get cold sores but whenever I do, I head straight to GNC to buy that stuff, it works great!

You can't get rid of them completely. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus which chill in your nerves until something stimulates them to cause the blisters.

If you just want a quick fix for the pain, my doctor once recommended yogurt, which apperantly nutralizes the acids or something. It does get rid of the pain, for a while at least, but I don't think it will help them heal any (although it keeps me from tounging them, which helps).

Zovirax it rules, get a script from you DR. You start taking it as soon as you feel the cold sore and most of the time with me I goes away in a few days, also the sore is WAY smaller and less painfull.

Campho-Phenique (not even close to correct spelling since i cant quite remember the name, but it comes in a yellow tube 🙂 )seems to work well for me. It recommends 4-6 doses a day or something, i find that using about 25+ doses really drys it up and gets it off in a day or so. Basically whenever i start to get one i just load the stuff on, rub it in, and as soon as it dries and i notice, i put more on.

my husband had medicine that worked so so but he usually just took the pain and burned it out w/ a match. Hurt like heck for a day or so but was gone after that.

He got his from stress mostly I think. My mom gets them from Tomatos

Gawd I hate them things...wana make somebody talk?? threaten them with a cold sore...........😕

Try Abreva it's OTC and its clinical efficacy is comparable to prescription treatments like Zovirax (which are typically reserved for profound eruptions in the immunosuppressed/compromised). Lysine, oils, creams, herbs, OJ won't do poop for cold sores . . . never have and probably never will. Get less sun, less stress, more food, and more rest.

Remember cold sores are vesicles . . . fluid filled. One of the few effective remedies are dessicants . . . which can dry the lesion. Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing) is cheap and safe to use topically. Apply several times a day and you will feel the area drying over time.

I'll second Abreva....

I haven't had one in a few years, which i attribute to the fact that my life is less stressful. BUT when I did get them, I would put a little carmex on them. Seemed to help them heal up faster.
