Anyone have a Fuji 2600Z digicam? thinking of getting that for my GF's

Father who is going away for two years on assignment for work.

Well it is either the Fuji 2600Z, or a Cannon A30 or A20 and cannot decide which to get.....

The Fuji comes with Rechargable batteries and a free 32m of Smart Media all for 213....

any opinions appreciated
 
I am also looking at getting a camera and looking at the 2600Z and the A40. I played with the 2600Z at Circuit City and didn't like these things:

Smartmedia - I prefer CF myself but this is all personal and if it was the only "problem" I would ignore this issue

Lens cover - it just slides over to where I want to put my fingers to the point that I triggered the little cover alarm 4 times in a few minutes. This will probably go away with time/practice but I'm not sure I like a separate lens cover that isn't linked to the power button.

Zoom - this may have been something I didn't know how to change but when I zoomed in, the viewfinder did not zoom in with the camera. Coming from regular optical cameras I still prefer to use a viewfinder than the LCD display in the back. I'm sure this will change over time but I just didn't want to be forced into using that approach.

Thick - this camera was thick. I wouldn't fit as well as some others in my pocket and more importantly, my GF has small hands and would not feel comfortable using it.


But the cost is absolutely fantastic for the specs. I really wish I liked it a little more.

Hopefully a satisfied owner or two will come in and make some comments too. I wish to reiterate I only played with it for a few minutes before I noticed these things and picked up another camera instead.
 
The Fuji Finepix 2600 is one of the best entry level digicams out there and with the recent price drops it's an incredible deal. This was selling for retail around $299 last month, I should know because I was trying to find a better digicam which I did.

Before taking the plunge on the 2600 I would check out the Canon PowerShot A40.

Yeah, like RossMan said, the 2600 is a great camera. I was able to get it November last year for under $200.

I was looking at the A40 but that is about $100 more than we would like to spend, but if I have to I can get the money.

Do you really think Stapls will PM the Fuji? also though with the PM I don't get the free memory....

Oh well I will see if I can get the A40 from somewhere for less.
 
You can't go wrong with the Fuji 2600 I just think the Canon A40 is a slightly better digicam.

If you can get a good deal on the Fuji 2600 then I'd go for it, I just wish it took CF instead of SM 🙁

The best price I've seen on the Canon A40 is $249 with free shipping from OfficeMax.com after $50 off $250 coupon but when I last checked (a few weeks ago) they no longer sold the A40.

My viewfinder works fine. I use it most of the time, since the LCD drains the batteries.
 
Hey Ross what do you think of the A20??

I had that one for a Day but took my Nikon 775 over it, but I think for her father he wants something easy and durable...is the Fuji a tough camera? also how well do two NIMH batterys work? Canon doenst have any rechargs but at least it takes 4 batts.

To be honest I'm not that familiar with the Canon A20 as I haven't read any reviews or know anyone who owns one.

The Canon A40's body seems more durable than the Fuji 2600's does, that's another plus in favor of the A40.
 
dpreview has a review of the A20. The only differences I could see was the movie capabilities, ISO ratings and shutter length.

Take your fuji zoom series camera into a pitch black room and take a pic.


post back here with your observations, also try this with another digicam if you have one.
 
:Q I just tried this on my 2600z. Pitch black and did used auto settings. Took a pic and uploaded the photo on my PC. Heck, the photo was pretty crisp and it looked like i had more than a flash in there!

I have a 2600, its a nice camera, takes nice pics nice features. Although my batteries(the original ones supplied) dont last too long:Q
 
This was the cam I was going to buy, till I found an open box deal on an Olympus D-510 at Office Depot for $170.

Since I have all Smartmedia stuff from my first digicam (Fuji 1400) the Fuji was going to be a great deal, but the Olympus takes SM as well, so all is good.

The thickness ( as mentioned previously) was the only thing I didnt love about it.
 
it takes great pictures, but the Fuji 2600 is a bit bulky (like 2.5'' thick), so i would pay just a wee bit more and move on to one of the digital elphs (110/200/300/330) or maybe even a kycera s30/s40, minolta dimage X, and olympus got some nice ones too 🙂

good advice. the 2600 was too thick for me as well. i think i'll try the nikon 2500 in addition to the canon 200
 
I have a 2600z and it is an excellent camera. I got it for $240 and it is worth every penny. Picture quality is great and its easy to use.
