Anyone have a few billion dollars to lend me?

Imagine this...

Say I start a huge serries of manufacturing plants spread accross Canada from making simple things like chairs, to more complex things like electronics, maybe even a brand new CPU company. Now, we need some way to make it cost less then all the crap that comes from China, and have better quality. Right now our exchange rate totally sucks. So we, as Canada stop buying from china since we can now make our own stuff. Then we start selling to the US, since it will be cheaper for them, and help the exchange rate.

This will open up tons of jobs too, and it will be a multi trillion dollar operation and I will feed the poor and give jobs to the jobless, and while I'm at it I might as well make peace in iraq by bribing the terrorists with money.

Who wants to join this operation? We even have corporate unicorns.

If only.... it was that easy. 😛

the reason you buy shit from china is because it's cheaper than you could possibly produce it yourself.

give it up.

What if we moved the plant to texas and new mexico and used the illegals for their cheap labor? It'll be double win. The illegals will be paid in beans while we can rightfully labell our goods "Made in the US".

Awesome! I'm gonna make Autos and Sell them at $49.99 at a Profit! They'll be better than any other Auto on the Planet and get 100 mpg!! It'll be sweet and I'll be rich!!!

Who wants in on the ground floor??

Umm...you know that goods produced in China cost less for a number of reasons, right? They pay their workers less and don't comply with benefits, employment laws or other human rights laws that we take for granted in Canada.

A better idea would be to campaign businesses and the government to stop buying shit from China until they clean up their act, start paying decent wages and benefits, and stop the human rights abuses.

This will not be an easy sell, though, as many people here are addicted to cheaply produced goods sold in bulk at Costco and Walmart, and they will suddenly rebel if that LCD TV costs 2-3 times as much because it's produced in Canada.

Yeah that would help for sure. Basically need to block anything that comes from there, then go with my plan. 😛 Yes stuff would be a bit more expensive, but over time the prices would go down a bit. Supply and demand.

iam from india so i am aware of this scenario pretty well
the guys in china dont know abt human rights
they dont know that they have such a thing both the labors and the employers and the inflation and needs and desires of the labors might also be low so they dont bother
i have a feeling that every one in china is contended with the things , so why bother ??

here in india we get labors and domestic help for 4~ 6 dollars a day that is from 9am to 5 pm. note we dont pay them in dollars.
they dont even have tvs in there houses and they cant even get there children to pass there high schools and yet they are contended and as they are un educated govt also doesnt dare to change the scenario as laboring is there only lively hood
so i encourage u guys to keep buying shit from asia more importantly from india (we are more creative, humane , god loving vegiterians and we dont have high hopes in lifes)

on the plus side think about it
the shortest possible distance from us to china is to dig a hole through the middle of earth
earth radius being 6400 km the shortest possible distance is still 12800kms!!
i dont think canada is that far from us
u can save a fortune on the transport costs

Yep shipping is where the costs would really be lower. That gives a bit of leway for the items themselves to be a bit more expensive out of the factory. Most factories can also be quite automated and computerized, producing lot of tech jobs and less hard labor ones. Also there's the perc that you're supporting an industry that is good towards it's workers by buying from there, though most people don't really care about that part, they just want the cheapest item.

Of course, all this is just dream land, it's not going to happen. Duke Nukem Forever will come out before this happens, and the CDs will be made in China. 😛
