I'm thinking of getting one to play around with.

If you have one, what do you use it for?

I clicked the link and am still clueless as to what a chumby actually is. It looks like a little cutsy looking ~6" LCD screen. Why does it need a special name?

It's basically a wireless "widget" appliance. I'm curious which widgets people find useful. It would be much more useful if it had a browser, but I guess the screen is a bit small for that.

I wake up with a chumby every morning. It lets me know I am still a man.

some of my friends are developers and they have em (free dev units). its flash lite based and they were telling me how little space they have to work with for apps (~100K?).

They said it was kind of cool, but sort of useless in that it needs to be plugged in all the time. One of them ripped theirs open, there is a spot for a 9V battery but it only lasts like 30mins and gets really hot.

That's too bad for you, I wake up with a woody.

I knew this topic would somehow deviate way off tangent, but I figured it would go more towards "alternator sized" or "can you buy in bulk?".

Sad you have so little imagination...

on a more on-topic note, I found this video of a chumby in action

I think the digital phot frame might be semi useful, but not sure about any of the other widgets.

I saw that it was plug in only, which is kind of dissappointing. I read somewhere that they were going to put a lithium ion batterey in it, but it would have doubled the cost.

My aunt won one and just threw it in the closet after not being able to hook it up, so she gave it to me. I connected it and loaded up some widgets on it. It's cool, but not $180 cool. It has an accelerometer in it to make some games on it a little more fun to play (otherwise, I can't imagine why they even bothered putting one in there) and some of the widgets are useful. The worst part, as was mentioned, is there's no totally-wireless funcionality. You can use the 9V battery, but that's borderline useless. I can imagine it might be ok if you want to occasionally disconnect the adapter cable to play a game or two, but it's really meant to sit on a desk of by your bed permanently. It also has 2 USB ports, something I haven't had a use for as of yet.

If this ever caught on, it would be cool. But for the time being, the amount of widgets out there is good enough to give the Chumby a "novelty" status. It would take a greater library of programs to make this seriously cool, and judging by the slow growth of the Chumby community, I'm not sure that's going to happen.

I have a Chumby(TM). (no ambiguity there!)

Yes it works as long as it's plugged in, once power's out the clock is out. And all of it's functionality other than clock has to be made available from wifi. Here's what I use it for.

Weather

Alarm clock that can be set to an interenet radio. The one that I use is a SHOUTcast station and NY Times podcast thing. There's a few local station available too.

Random funnies: David Letterman's top 10 list, ebay watcher, magic 8 ball, sudoku...

It's just like having a independent widget on your bed side.

I could see it being decent for the weather widget if nothing else. Not $180 decent, but maybe $50.

I don't know about anybody else but a chumby sounds like a right delightful toy.

No. My phone does everything that the chumby does, and alot more, and cost basically the same amount of money.
