Anyone have a child entering kindergarten this year?

I have to register my daughter next week! She has to go to a bridging program for ten days in the middle of summer, 4 hours a day. They think it is a better way to judge what a child actually knows. I was just curious if this is common practice now or if it's just my district. Anyone?
