Anyone have a baby that experienced seizures?

My wife and I were expecting our third child on May 18th (scheduled Caesarean, since my wife is unable to deliver vaginally...) She surprised us and came early on April 29th (Friday) -- my wife work up in the morning bleeding a whole lot. Once they got in there, they found her placenta had abrupted (detached from the uterus) and was bleeding a bunch.

Baby is almost 4 weeks early, and after a shaky first day, she spent two days with us and learning to nurse. She was getting a hang of it, and doing well, but we noticed she has been shaking. Well our pediatrician came out last night and realized she has been having seizures. They rushed her to Primary Children's hospital in Salt Lake (across the valley) because they have more specialists that can help her.

Has anyone else experienced this with a newborn child? What was your child's diagnosis? Did it get better? I'm just a little anxious about everything and a little overwhelmed and hoped someone else had already walked this path.

Sorry to hear that. My daughter had a bad case of jaundice when she was first born but we just kept praying and everything came out good as I know will for you and your family.

Ask your pediatrician they will know better than anyone else.

if it helps, i had seizures when i was a new born. they had to do a spinal tap and eveything. they never did find out exactly what was wrong, but i had them less and less as time went on. I stopped having them al together by the age of 2.

hope she's ok.

Wish you the best, but don't worry too much. I know it must be scary to go through that, but keep in mind that seizures aren't exactly uncommon. 1/10 people experience at least one seizure in their life, the majority of whom are perfectly normal. My sister use to have seizures when she was young but they eventually stopped, and aside from being a complete b1tch, she's perfectly fine. :p

Children's brains are extremely plastic (literally) when they're born.

strangely enough, I've been considering going to work at a children's hospital ER in the near future.

Well you are taking proper precaution, so I would not worry too much at this point. My friend had a baby who experienced seizes of a sort, and they went away as the nervous system became more developed.. in the first year. My youngest DD also had a couple times where it looked like was having some kind of weird tremor thing going but it wasn't very bad, and couldn't reproduce for the pediatrician, only happened a couple of times.

My second child had symptoms similar to what you describe. I wouldn't call what she had "seizures" but she was definitely shaking. We had her in to see various doctors and found out that it is not all that uncommon. Turns out they said it was normal development. It was simply a matter of the brain developing its connections it stopped when the necessary growth had been completed. We went through a couple weeks on edge and eventually it passed on its own. Although it is scary and easy to fear the worst (typical parent) it isn't always so.

Just wait until you have your first experience with croup. That will put the fear of god into you. Had a ambulance ride just last night to the emergency room.

Good luck.

Thanks all for the love and support. Your comments have really been beneficial to me. I am learning a lot about this as time goes by -- it does seem to be fairly common, especially with infants that come early. Everything is going well with her. I was able to feed her a bottle this afternoon and hold her for a little while -- it was a boost for me.

Thanks again.

She's even doing a bit better today. I've been praying a little and have been feeling more comfort about everything, that it will work out and be "ok".

good luck.

neurological disorders are alway scary and too often inexplicable, making it very frustrating for those involved. keep her all 5 of her senses stimulated, which should help with development. the docs will probably run some brain scans if the seizures persist, that's just my guess. keep us posted.

I feel for ya man.
My son had a fever seizure (high fever from an ear infection) at about 6mo's
scary as sh!t to watch when they are so little
Even scarier thing is, my wife had a brain tumor removed when she was 16, and she's on tegretol to prevent seizures, so we were totally paranoid.
MRI came out OK
