Anyone have a Antec P180, DFI Ultra-D, and Ninja HSF?

I am still deciding between a SI-120 and the Ninja but say I get the Ninja, can the DFI mobo really stand all that torque from such a tall and heavy heatsink? My machines do get moved every month or so but when I transport them it is motherboard side down so the hsf is standing straight up.

Also, I am wondering if anyone has this setup and and how they arranged their ninja and fan. I know the SPCR site had this setup with the top fan unused and the back as exhaust but it was with a different mobo if I recall correctly. With the CPU socket in a different arrangement as the test bed I am looking for some advice.

Just for reference, the whole build is:

Opteron 165 hopefully oc to 2.4-2.6
Ninja or SI-120 w/ yate-loon DS12
DFI ultra-D
2 GB OCZ Plat
Evga 7800GT with stock cooler though might be replaced with a VF700cu if it is too loud.
160GB SATA
300GB SATA
Antec P180

The Scythe, i believe has support on the other side of the motherboard. Additionally, it is lighter than you would think. SPCR (SilentPCReview) uses the Scythe on a variety of different machines, including a machine with the P180. Everything seemed to work fine.

I would recommend that over the SI-120.

I don't spend a ton of time in the cases and cooling forum (I am more of a general hardware and video man) but I do remember a user by the name of Bonzai Duck saying that the SI-120 had a lower thermal resistance or something along those lines that allowed it to transfer heat more efficiently. Is this true? I though the SI-120 and the Ninja are almost equal in performance but the SI-120 does a decent job cooling other components nearby where as the ninja does not.

Also, how hard is it to install the ninja on this particular board? I am worried about replacing the bottom bracket. I am no stranger to heavy heatsinks (I have a PAL8045 on my AXP setup) but this thing is huge.

Thanks for the info

that's how i have mine set up, but im in the process of converting it to watercooling, i have the fan in front and on the ninja blowing towards the back, with the top and rear fans as exhausts

as for installing it, i used the stock backplate and cut the screws to fit and it works fine, those clips are a bit hard to push down, i was afraid of cracking my motherboard the first time i did it lol

Well the C/W of thermal dissipation is very close with a higher speed fan. However, with a lower speed fan, the Scythe literally obliterates all the competition. It IS the best cooler on the market.

I honestly dont know. I would definitely head over to http://www.silentpcreview.com and check out their review on it. They very in depth in all aspects.

While I don't have a P180, I do have a DFI UT-D and a Scythe Ninja in a Sonata case. It's fine. I had to replace the DFI backplate with the metal one that comes with the Ninja but after doing that it works fine. Do be aware, though, that once the Ninja is mounted, you won't have access to one of your mainboard screws and access to the bottom DIMM is a little tricky.

Nice heatsink. Not nearly as heavy as it looks. Still, I wouldn't recommend transporting your system with it mounted.

Edit: installing it is pretty trivial. If I had one gripe about the Ninja it would be that the fan mounting is a little finicky. Probably best that you attach the fan before mounting to the mainboard (due to the aforementioned screw, you'll need to install the Ninja after you've already put the board in your case). The actual installation part, though, is as simple as I've seen. 4 clips. *click* *done*.

Thanks for the info, I was not aware it blocked a mobo screw. The funny thing is I usually don't use all the mobo screws anyway but with a HSF this big I think I will need to. I guess as of right now the ninja is what I will get and use it with one of my Yate-Loon 120mm

OT: Did you have to use any extensions for your Powerstream?

the only extensions i used was going from one of the molex connectors to the front for my zalman fan controller, if you put your drivers in the bottom spots, it shouldn't be a problem though
