ive owned 4 mp3 players that wernt made by apple, all functioned flawlessly, and IMO were 10x better then their apple counterparts, and they are also cheaper, not ugly, play more formats, and work without itunes

I primarily use my player at the gym or while running in the neighborhood so I love my Mobiblu DAH1500i It's 1GB and smaller than anything Apple or anyone else makes and it has FM radio as well.

Not the cheapest solution, but I guess it's in the range of a high end Ipod, I LOVE my Dell Axim x50v. Just ordered a 4GB SD card for ~$80. I'm able to check email from hotspots, watch movies on a MUCH bigger screen, GPS, games... Since I listen a lot of talk radio sohws that are 3hr+, it's nice to have a scroll bar to jump forward and back quickly. I don't think even the Ipod or any other player has a better way of searching to an exact spot...

If you have the need/want for a more gadgety solution, with included bulk, it's the way to go.

I own a 1Gb Creative MuVo myself. It's about as simple as you can get in terms of functionality (the MuVo is just a flash drive) and ease of use.

I have the same. 40GB for under $200 - I have no complaints.

I have one of the Sansa e200 series of MP3 players, the e250 2GB it does mp3s and videos. Bonus is its flash drive based not hard drive.
I use to have the Archos Gmini but the hard drive died in it.

I originally did that and ended up sending it back. It was just way too bulky for what I wanted. Having to carry that and a cell phone was too much.

I have given consideration with purchasing a Treo 650/700 though. It would double as a phone and mp3 player with a good bit of the functionality of a Axim. That way I'd carry only one piece of equipment, though somewhat bulky also.

I'll converge when a decent device is offered at a reasonable price. :) If you stack enough coupons, you can get a Dell PDA for a song... I couldn't resist. Although, I agree with you, if I add any more gadgets to my belt, I will offically be Batman.
