anyone had their tonsils out?

about once a month I go through a huge bout with tonsilloliths. It's disgusting, annoying, and painfull to push/prod them out. I'm very seriously considering having my tonsils removed so that I don't have to deal with this.


Anyone care to give opinions?


The tonsilloliths get stuck WAY back in the folds inbetween my tonsils and throat. I literally have to forcefully push/slide my finger along my tonsil/throat area to force them out of the pockets and folds. It HURTS afterwards and is annoying

I doubt your doctor will recommend/allow the procedure. They really hate to take out tonsils these days.

aren't there other ways to get rid of those? rinsing with hydrogen peroxide or something?

I had my tonsils taken out when I was 10ish. Even to this day I don't know what a tonsil is. lol.

What does the tonsil do anyways? And why the need for its removal?

I rinse with mouthwash twice a day (gargle, etc. etc.) and have started drinking sprite (the high carbonation seems to help) but I STILL get them.

If this a cronic problem, I'd go with removal. If not it's better not to mess with them.

I had mine out when I was young and I don't miss them one bit. I had some pretty nasty problems with them that wouldn't go away. I
actually don't really know what they do but I've been perfectly healthy my entire life without them. It was pretty damned sore for a while after getting them out, but as far as I remember it was nothing too bad either.

I don't understand how some people get them so often (like the OP), while others have never heard of them, let alone gotten them (like me and every person I know).

My girlfriend just had hers out as they were producing tonsil stones (whiteish lumps at the back of her throat). She had it done privately (here in the UK you either have insurance or you wait a long long time), and was out the next day. It took her a week or two to get over it, but she's much better now.

If you have it done, it will hurt like hell for a while, but as long as you eat jelly and drink a lot, you'll be fine.

well, in my case I was made to eat tons of ice cream to numb the pain. It might backfire on you...

Yup, had them and my adnoids out at the same time about 17 years ago. The thing I remember most though is when I woke up in the recovery room I just started puking blood for a few minutes. It sucked. After that point it wasn't bad at all.

I had them out when i was really young, so i hardly remember getting them removed.

all that i really remember was i had to chew the general anesthetic pills, because i couldnt swallow them. and they tasted like major ass. fvcking gross

Tonsils are rarely removed anymore, and tonsil stones wont necessarily go away when they're removed.

Problems with them can typically be cured with simple oral antibiotics, but honestly, just scrape em away...

it isn't an issue of just scraping away.... they get stuck in the folds and way down inbetween my tonsil and my throat. They have to be pushed out from underneath.. similar to how you would scrape a splinter out of your skin. It hurts like a mofo and my tonsils/throat are sore afterwards but my breath stinks if I don't do it.

yeah go to a Ear, Nose throat doctor.

I just had mine removed a month or so ago.

It is NOT very fun. Not eating for 2 weeks really sucked. but now its all good.

For the past 3-4 years i would get tonsilitis 2-3 times per year... One per year which would be severe enough to send me to the hospital.

Starting last summer i had tonsilitis 3 times in a 2 month span, the last of which occured in August and my tonsils never got smaller after that last bout. I ended up getting them removed about 3 months ago and it was the best decision i could have ever made.

That being said, the surgery DEFINATELY isnt for everyone and i would avoid it unless you NEED it. The day of the surgery i was feeling fine, but the 2 weeks following were pretty rough. I couldnt swallow solid food (or hell ANY food) for nearly 9-10 days and ended up losing over 16lbs in that time span. Took me awhile to begin to talk again too.

I can now breathe easier, sleep better, and feel much more refreshed throughout the day. I guess my body was just used to constantly fighting my tonsils.

Mine were removed when I was very young. I just remember that I had a sore throat after the surgery and that I got to eat a lot of jello. Oh, and my mom got me a Raggedy Anne doll that I still have!

Had my tonsils out 5 years ago. The first few hours after you come to are terrible, but after that the painkillers will manage it for the most part, and it'll only really hurt when you swallow. Feels like you're swallowing a cannonball for about a week. The change in your throat's shape will make your voice sound different, which is sort of wierd for a while.

I had mine removed when I was a kid and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I went from being a very sick child having to go the doctor twice a month to going to see a doctor once a year. See you later you piece of crap tonsils.
