Anyone had problems with Samsung DVD/CDR Combo ??

A friend of mine has been having a lot of trouble with his drive( Model SM-308). He burnt one music Cd but after that it doesn't go past "block 648" (not sure what that is) or 5%, after which the cd is just closed and it gives a buffer underrun error. He can play DVDs on it just fine, it's the burner thats giving problems. He's running a Duron 700mhz with 256 megs of RAM, so I don't think it's a problem of sys resources. Do you think the drive might be damaged somehow?? Has anyone had similar problems with other burners? He tried changing software from adaptec Easy Cd Creator to musicmatch jukebok, but the problem replicated itself.
