Near Toronto, ON.

You don't have Asian grocery store/supermarket near you? The mushrooms I bought were from South Korea, as in they come in container ships.

We do have locally grown ones.
Not in my town. Now I could go to St Louis but I will need a ride there.

Here you go:

Their duck breasts are pretty good, and they even have truffles!

I find it hard to believe there are no farmer's markets/grocery stores near where you live.

Exotic food markets like that is kind of a niche thing you'll only really find in big cities. There is not enough people into that stuff to make it a viable business in a smaller city.

Maybe I'm spoiled by living in MA, where there is a good farming community seemingly throughout the state and places like this aren't hard to find, even in small towns...

And it's a dang shame. The diversity of my locale is simply off the charts. There's no way I can even hope to keep up. It's rather breath taking.

Yes an Asian Market downtown would be nice as well.
My very favorite neighborhood anywhere (I should travel more!) is downtown Oakland's Chinatown. It's about 5 miles from me. I feel ennobled when I walk those streets. I don't detect a whiff of tourism (unlike San Francisco's, where tourism has always been rampant). The honesty is invigorating.

i've seen the grow-in-bucket videos and frankly that doesnt look good.

I mean, it's not that "it locks yucky" but you have to dedicate time and effort, plus a portion of the house, for a product which is much easier to just buy when needed from the supermarket.
Even shiitake, which are the only mushroom i'd really consider, are £2 for a packet, and i only occasionally buy them. There's better hobbies, idk, making jerky, preparing your stock, where you get a much better retun on the savings.

Dry shiitake is much better than fresh ones.

i agree. The asian supermarkets here carry big-ass bags of dried shiitake that are idk, 1kg? dried, when you recover them in water they double in size, for about £10.

Definitely not 1kg lol. Dry mushroom has very little weight.

A Hobby? And besides, maybe I would want to grow mushroom types that are hard to find in stores around where I live.

And which spores are you referring to anyway?

I believe the ancient Mexicans called it the 'flesh of the gods'

misquoted, turns out it's £20 not £10, so i guess in a sense you are somewhat right.

That is the cheaper variety. You want the ones that are off white with crack pattern on the top. like the ones I linked.
