As per the question above, does anybody do this? I was doing web searches for buying mushrooms to possible make my own shroom ketchup, and kept finding guides and books about being a mushroom grower. :mushroom::mushroom::mushroom:

Now I heard before that mushrooms are easy to grow depending on which species and conditions, but is it? How do you get started?

The main issue I've heard is that they smell bad while you are growing them. I've never done it but I do know people that do it very successfully. I may try in the future, you just need a nice moist/dark area to grow them in that is away from the living area of your house.

you can buy pre-preped logs for home growing. the mycelium is soaked into the log and will sprout the mushroom part later. the main thing is to avoid contamination with some wild fungus spore.

just search 'mushroom log'

So there are illegal in only three States then? What about Federal laws? And just to be clear, I'm looking at growing edible funguses not Magic Mushrooms.

Speaking of psilocybin spores, under Federal law these types of mushrooms are illegal to have or sell. In addiction, I live in HUD housing so having/using illegal substances will evicted. So unless you willing to let move in with you and seduce your girlfriend/wife, or in the case of lesbian couples, jump right when both of you are going at it, please do not give me unwanted advice about growing Magical Fungi, or the amount of money selling them.

you will need a dark, warm room for this like a heated basement. Sterile soil and a packet of spores of your choice. Then keep it moist and dark and you should see some mushrooms growing fairly soon.

Thanks Iron Woode. So which kind of mushroom do you recommend for a beginner? Shiitake? The only shrooms I see in stores around here are the small brown and white button types.

My brothers grow a couple thousands of pounds a week....doesn't really smell at all except when they are filling/emptying the rooms of the soil/compost.

Just watched a very informative video here:
Man I didn't even consider using 5 gallon buckets to grow an edible fungus:oops::oops::oops:.
Plastic bags work better

but the amount of spores those mushrooms create is amazing, will plug up an air filter in no time

Thanks I will use what works out best for me. So what do you do with your mushrooms are you harvest a cluster? That looks like more then a person or family can use by themselves.

We were one of the first farms to grow those commercially back in the late 80's and it was a hell of a learning experience, they grow amazingly quick and we always had way more than we could sell. They taste amazing though, bread them up like fried chicken steak and they are good meat alternative

Oysters will actually freeze ok after you've battered them, but one of those bags would be more than enough i'd think for a while. The mushrooms compost really well though and give you great potting soil for your garden

Unfortunately I don't have any yards for a garden , hence why I will be doing this indoors. So how often do I have to buy new growth media and spawn?

you'll get 2 maybe 3 flushes from the bag so it will fruit for a couple of days then stop and then start again until all the nutrients are used up

Wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to just buy mushrooms in the grocery store when you want them?
Like I said in a post far... far... up... I only seen the small white and brown button kind in stores. And besides, will where is the fun in that? I'm planning on grow the more exotic species.

mushrooms can be very complicated/impossible to cultivate--it depends heavily onthe species.

"button mushrooms" are the most common, default mushrooms that you find in stores because they are very easy and the mycillium are robust--they don't require very specific soil and microenvironment conditions to produce fruiting bodies.

on the other hand, the amazing chanterelle is still impossible to cultivate, because no one can get a mycillium to branch in all tested culture conditions--you can observe and test the established mycillium in their known natural environments (pH, moisture, nearby types of trees and such...all of this stuff is very important), but there are further unappreciated conditions that the natural chanterelles require (golden chanterelles, I'm not sure of the other varieties).

And yeah--it can be very stinky. These things process decaying organic matter after all.

If you're trying to get your trip on after whatever mushrooms you plan to grow, prepare to share your living space(s) with lots of cowshit and horseshit.

Mushrooms are a lot like coconut... just the weird texture alone disgusts me.

That and unlike coconut, mushrooms have practically no flavor.
