not sure what my weekend plans are... I could really go for some fresh off the farm Jersey corn, but I'm not sure I want to drive all the way down to South Jersey and deal with whatever clusterfuck will be afoot on a holiday weekend.

we were supposed to go up to a lake and do some grilling (burgers/sausage), but the guy who was organizing it had a death in the family, so I'm not sure what the status of it is.

huge shock yesterday at costco - the price of imported australian lamb chops (8.99/lb) was less than most good cuts of US beef (9.99/lb++)

O_O

At the market I was happy to have picked up a pound of farmer johns bacon for 4 bucks. goddamn food prices are crazy this year.

We were going to go to Lake Hopatcong but never got around to planning anything.

Looks like we may have company though so I will have to go out and get some skirt or hanger for the women and a couple of ribeyes for the men. I will probably make a chicken jambalaya to go with it. Was thinking of making a crockpot pernil but that is getting ambitious now.

Lol. Have you not grocery shopped the past couple of months? Choice ribeyes and strips have been $10/lb for months. Even cheap cuts like top sirloin is close to $8/lb. Pork is up as well but not much as beef. Pack of ribeye will run you $40-50 now.

I haven't bought beef in a long time. I'll stick to australian lamb chops for that price.

Maybe beer can chicken this weekend. Not in the mood for smoked brisket or pork shoulder.
I'd smoke a turkey if I could find a whole one at a reasonable cost. I really should buy 2 or 3 extras around Thanksgiving and keep them for the next summer.

Sadly, no.. I can no longer afford to grill or smoke meat. It's more of a choice really, but when you can buy $8-$10 pizzas and feed the family of 5 for $20, or buy two steaks for just my wife and I for $20 and no one else eats, its going to be cheap pizza any day. That doesn't include the price of the wood to smoke it, the seasonings, the sides, etc. The price of meat in general is just insane. Whole chickens are 8 bucks. My wife doesn't like pork shoulder, so no pulled pork. That leaves smoked turkey, brisket, ribs, or chicken basically and all of that is through the roof.

I went from eating steaks weekly to about every two weeks. Money is not the problem. Big picture $10-20 extra a week isn't a big deal. It's the thought of overpaying that kills me. I switched to more pork, chicken, and fish.

lol 23 bucks. fuck that shit.

btw normal price on that FJ bacon was $9!!!!!
$23 for 2 pounds and I think it's free shipping. Yes, it is that good. When we pass through Bishop I'm always hauling back many pounds of it for friends. They always ask when I'll be going again so I can get them more.

Well, my wife and I just moved into our new house last weekend and for the first time I will have an actual flame grill (old condo only allowed electric grills). Got myself a Summit series 6 burner. Have yet to cook on it and I have some substantial gift cards to Whole Foods that are burning a hole in my pocket. Anyone recommend anything good to really break in and test a grill for the first time? No fish please, as I don't eat anything that swims.

$11/lb for bacon? Screw that. Bacon is good but not that good. I can get a nice cut of pork belly for $7/lb. Uncured pork belly > any bacon I've ever had. The smoking and the curing process of making bacon doesn't make the pork belly any better, just different. And it's hard to eat pound of bacon because of the salt and smoke. I can easily eat pound of regular pork belly.

Nice grill! Can't go wrong with burgers, IMO. Ground beef is cheap so if you screw it up, it's no big deal.
