Anyone got crucial ballistix memory?

Hello folks.

As you can see from my specs below in the sig, I believe my major bottleneck is the 4 * 512MB Corsair Value Select DDR400 8-3-3-2.5. I have decided to spend some well earned cash and get 2 x Crucial Ballistix PC-4000 BL12864Z503 1GB DDR with the intention to keep at least my current overclock with the possibility of pushing for more.

I was wondering if anyone has used this memory and how they found it to perform. I have read the memory articles on the website fully and believe this to be my best purchase.

Does anyone have a better recommendation for 2 x 1 GB sticks?

Thanks 🙂

How is 2 gigs of ram a bottleneck? Going for the crucial is a waste. Stick with what you have. It won't make much of a difference.

I was going to upgrade the 2 x 512 mb DDR333 in my linux box with the old ones from this system, then up the 256MB DDR 266 with the DDR333 to my gf's machine.

Also I wanted to see if I could push this box to 2.7+GHz

Most ballistix sticks top out at around 250MHz. Even running 2.5-2-2 over 2.5-3-3 won't make any difference. What command rate are you running now? If you get 2 1GB sticks, you'll more than likely have to run 2T, which, if you're running 1T now, will kill your performance. Also, what do you need 2GB of RAM for anyway? Gaming requires 1GB at the most. As for your overclock, try different ratios/dividers/multipliers etc. and see how much further you can push your CPU. 237x10 (2.37GHz)isn't stable for me but 300x8 (2.4GHz) is, so you have to play around to see what your system likes most. Off hand, I'd say you might want to try going for 300x9 with a 166 divider on the RAM. Use A64 Tweaker to then tweak your timings and you should be good to go

Correct. Crucial Ballistix is relatively cheap, if you are european that is. 2 x 512mt pc-3200 would cost me 214 euros including shipping. When as Kingston Valueram 1024MB/1GB Kit 400MHz cl3 would cost 180e including shipping from the biggest web store in Finland... Would be worth the money, atleast for me.

I am running 2T at the moment, and I need 2 GB of RAM. If I wont see that much difference then I might just Custom Remap the car instead 🙂

I get 4512 MB/sec in Sandra at the moment.

You have me convinced, I have now had a rethought and I will save up a bit more and get a dual core chip on launch 😀

Change of plan, memory ordered! I want to upgrade the 1gb linux box memory anyway and my gf will see the benifit of the old linux box 1 gig instead of 256mb.

Well, I have the memory installed and sandra see's over 6.6gb per sec and memtest has risen from 2048mb/sec to 3.2 gb/sec.

Running Super PI to 32M places to test stability. Will post results to SuperPI 32M thread in this forum.
