Anyone got any issues with Netscape 6?

are you guys talking about Mozilla or Netscape? there's a difference (I found out the hard way), but I assume you guys are talking Netscape..

my experiance with Netscape's Beta 6 is this: stay away.. they add to much bloat to it. just stick with Mozilla, you get everything you have in Netscape 4.7 PLUS compatability with nearly every page (firingsquad's menu on the left doesn't work when I move the mouse over it, it used to on IE).

btw, I think Netscap 6 PR3 was based on an EARLIER version of Mozilla, so things might have changed somewhat..

BTW, where are you guys finding these theme things? the 'new' one included in Mozilla is pretty nice.. in fact, it looks like one of Linux Mandrake's GUI's.. if only the REST of Windows could look so pretty!

You are correct. Netscape 6 always base on older Mozilla versions

ROFL I couldn't even install NS 6.0! 🙂

When it was about to install, it just said that a file (sdinst.dll) wasn't a real Windows image (?!?) and gave an error (#193) after which it aborted the installation... man this sucks...

I'm using Mozilla Milestone 18 as well, and I think that this is the most impressive browser ever. Heck, I don't even use IE anymore 😉

I successfully in stalled N6 (on the third try) and it pulled up webpages with shocking speed... no wait, that was the blank page I have set as home. It won't load my website at all, it can't handle basic javascripts I use to preload images, frame handling bites. CSS... I'm not even going there. It crashed loading up netscape.com in windows 2k. It will probably work in Linux (but only because the competition in Linus bites).. I've installed it but haven't tried it yet.

Overall, you would think I would have learned my lesson after downloading N6 PR1 and finding no uninstall program.. Live and learn I guess.

p.s. If anyone knows of a good stable alternate browser for Linux, pass me the link to it por favor.

wow, it's like I'm talking to myself.. no-one seems to listen to me..

if you had problems with NETSCAPE TRY MOZILLA.

it was MUCH EASIER TO INSTALL then Netscape 6, and is better stability wise too..

A couple of questions on Mozilla:

1) Does it overtake your system when you install it?
2) For Win32, do I download and install the Installer.exe or the Zipfile

Ok, I have Mozilla, N6, and Netscape 4.74 installed.

Mozilla has problems with Javascript and with Java. The dumb thing wanted to get a "java plugin" to play my java applet.

N6 has problems with Java only. Not the same kinf but it stalls while downloading the applet.

Something else that affects both of them is the inability to operate on my secondary monitor. Maybe it is because I only have 8MB of memory on that video card, I don't know. All I know is that if I move the window there nothing works. Besides neither one gives me the option to have either words or pictures in the toolbars.

So it is my opinion that this "new final" N6 still is a beta, very beta version. Which is very disapointing to a long time loyalist 🙁

Now if any of you want to try it without registering with AOL/Netscape then you need to edit this file all-ns.js and make the browser.enable.activation false.

I have'em all installed but I still use 4.74. Because, on top of all the new erros the older browser is faster.

looking at this
N6 is actually based on Milestone18

About Netscape:
Netscape 6
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; m18) Gecko/20001108 Netscape6/6.0

mpancha:

I am having the same problem! But my theory is that the Cache is not working, thus preloaded images do not get preloaded becuase there is no Cache to preload to.

Try going offline with NS6. I bet all your mouseover images will dissapear. This is becuase there is no cache. Also if you have any javascript that are called from a file, they too will not work becuase these files are usually preloaded into the Cache where they are later called when the html requests it.

Maybe this is a win2k problem.

I'm not sure that the cache is not working at all, because I could see it increasing when loading new pages.

Maybe the problem is on how N6 is interpreting the code. Some javascript works and some don't. And the problem is not necessarily the same in N6 and Mozilla.

For example, I have a dhtml page that doesn't work in either one, but the script that launches a second page automatically, only works in N6.

On the other hand, I have a javascript menu that does not work in either one, but the links inside the menu that open up a page in another frame only work with Mozilla.

Either my code is too sloppy(good chance) or the two browsers are failing either for too strict rules or not enough rules being adopted.

It is rather frustating, and I think I'll have a redirect that points N6 to the same page that AOL users get to see. Or even worse since the AOL browser can read my javascript fine.

I can't boot into W98 right now, so I can't really check to see if this is a w2k problem or not.

HAHAHA

I just noticed that my version of Mozilla, which I downloaded 4 days before N6 was available, is newer than N6.

Mozilla = 2000110920
N6..... = 20001108

So what's not good enough for Mozilla is the gold code for AOL.

What a buncha mofos overthere.

My cache folder is inside my user folder, as are the mail, chrome, news & ImapMail folders.

The only thing like IE is that they divided in a ton of other folders. Which will make a pain in azz to steal pron videos thru the cache 🙂

WW

PS. There may be some cache problem, as I experienced the same thing with some graphics and with javascrip originated in external files. The same could be said about plain Java zip files. So it could be that the cache doesn't work properly. Or that N6 interpreter is a little weird. Or both. Who knows.... I've decided to forget about it. I'll wait for the final Mozilla, and then for N6b2 in two or three years 🙂

this actually looks nice and works faster on some sites.....I hated netscape all along...the browser looks very neat and nice and no crashes till now 🙂

Before I start I installed netscape 6 on my win2k partition. What the heck? I though this uninstall BS was overwith after Netscape 6 PR 1. I installed Netscape 6, full version, you know ,the one that just came out a couple days ago, and it sucks. Not only that, but I went to the control panel, uninstalled Netscape... restarted and voila... Netscape 6 is still there. SO I checked the Control Panel again, and according to the control panel netscape 6 is gone.. but its not. What's with the phantom uninstallation? I want it off, that's why I uninstalled. Why won't it leave my system?

die Netscape die!

🙂 all better now. its so nice getting stuff like that outta your system

I had no problems with the install. You don't have to sign-up to use the browser. New browsers load just as fast as Explorer. No crashes. Maybe you people just have to much crap on your systems that mess everything up.

Possible. I tried to install Netscape 6 on a non-Win2k (actually it was Win95) computer at the advanced computer lab here, and it crashed several times. Then when I ran it, it crashed randomly. But then, so did MSIE and Netscape 4.75. On my system, which I keep relatively clean and orderly, it has not crashed yet.

does too much crap include the OS (I've tried winMe, win98 and win2k) and nothing more than the operating system... no background programs because I dont have any. All that's in the systray is the volume control.... and Netscape is still slow. As far as Ram goes... I have 128 physical and 192MB swap file. the swap file wasn't touched, and there was 83% of the physical Ram free before running Netscape.

I personally think Netscape just plain sucks. THey have a great concept, but load time is horrible. Even Adobe Photoshop 5.5 loads up in under 20 seconds. I can load PHotoshop in under 45 seconds over my LAN. Netscape takes a full minute, and considering all it does is translate html, that's pretty pathetic. I would say it does css, java and all that cool stuff, but it doesn't because of the cache problem its having.

all in all, all I gotta say is the same thing I said before... Die Netscape Die! 🙂

I tried uninstalling too, but the thing won't go away.

I've never seen such a pos as a release version from Netscape before. Even 2.0 was better than this.

That's it, I'm suing them. I want my wasted time back. 🙂

All this simply makes me sad.

I had been a longtime Netscape supporter, finally dumping it around version 4.71 which crashed incessantly. I've been using IE 5.01 for several months now and it has been stable to the point of reverence. Maybe crashes once a week, which is pretty remarkable for an application that is basically open 24/7 and used consistently for sometimes 16hrs a day.

I had high hopes that NS 6 would return the name to its former glory, sad to see this final release doing so poorly.

Well, there is one positive thing. I'm glad I learned from previous NS releases to wait until enough Guinnea pigs did the testing for me...

Best regards,
Floyd

I always had trouble with the old navigator/communicator versions that include the integrated mail client and composer. The most stable and fastest versions were the standalone ones. Netscape 4.08 is still the fastest, though on my system Netscape 6 is the most stable (0 crashes thus far)
