One of my fans inside my case is starting to get noisy and i bet that it has collected tons of dust on it and needs cleaning ASAP. I will do it tomorrow but i wanted to know if any of you have any good ideas on how to clean a fan... what to use e.t.c.

Thanks in advance

Can of air and a small rag or some q-tips. These no magic trick for getting them clean.

I use an air compressor with its pressure turned way down. I just blow out the entire case to clean everything up at once.

other cleaning 'tools':
foam swabs (available at RadioShack & other electronics suppliers)
an old worn out tooth brush (after washing out the toothpaste residue)

I've found some of the household cleaning foams most useful (rubbing alcohol is also great) -- just be a little careful which ones you use (toxicity, plastic meltability). This coupled with an old, clean toothbrush (preferred for scrubbing ability over q-tip) and a little too much time on one's hands results in a clean fan.

On a slight tangent, a car-vac that blows as well as sucks, when set to blow does wonders for cleaning your case -- just make sure the bag is not attached -- you DO NOT want all the gunk to be deposited in your case!

I used a can of compressed air with a straw to focus the air bursts. After that, I used some high quality paper towel and water to remove dust from fans.

Another vote for the Q-Tips.

I just had a thought:confused:. What if you used some of those anti-static monitor wipes they sell at staples/office depot and wipe the blades of the fan prior to re-assembly. I wonder if that might hinder some of the dust build up.

hmmm...I think I'll try that.
