been thinking getting a lock safe in case some burglars decided to make a visit. Not that I live in a dangerous neighborhood, but my friends been hit before and they lived in pretty decent area.
The lock/safe I am looking at is a small one, about 8 x 8 x 12, like the ones you see in a hotel room. It is only 15 lbs though, so it can easily be defeated by carrying the whole thing out. My thought is, items being inside a safe is still better than out, the hassle of carrying it would be a good enough deterrent. On the other hand, it just screams "take me" instead.

want to see your thoughts / personal experience.

I don't have one, but I do have larger gun safes. Both kinds will usually come with predrilled holes so you can bolt them to walls/floors. That will usually deter any smash/grab/out in minute guys.

I've thought that too... Unless it's bolted to a floor and is heavy enough to make it more difficult to haul away, it just asks to be taken. Might make a good decoy though.

ya, i would get an actual gun safe that can double up as a security lock box. But I don't have guns, AND I don't have that much space.

Another advantage, you can get fire rated safes in case you decide to burn the place down.

These work nice:

Failing that, these are easier to find and similar:

Bolt it from inside. Though, I'm not sure what kind of tool you'd need to make the holes, a regular drill bit wont work. Can always bring it to a machine shop to have them make the holes.

Can also have another empty one as a decoy. Maybe even rig it so something bad happens when they open it (hopefully in their house...), like a can of hornet spray is activated.

lol, buy it and put sandbags in there.

Hmmm.... Or maybe buy one small and just light enough to be taken, but tie it to an alarm that trips when lifted -- real or fake -- to scare a thief off.

Screw that. Put in a fake safe made of cardboard and fill it with explosive. Kills thieves dead.

No children were considered in this design offering.

Make sure to post lots of warning images all over. Include some finely printed text on the cover. Covers your ass for lawsuits.

I don't keep anything valuable enough in my house that would warrant being locked in a safe.

I do, however, have some documents that I wouldn't want destroyed in a fire. I keep them in a small fireproof safe/box that I specifically want to be able to carry out of the house in an emergency. In addition to documents, it also contains a few small mementos and a backup of my important computer files.

Sounds like you have two kinds of purchases to think about in the future. You'll have to get creative with the space needed though.

Yep. Plus 2 pitbulls, door alarms and alarm system in garage. On top of that I always lock the door where most of my valuables are kept. Even the audio system in my car is bolted down with alarm and inside the secured garage. It's not fort knox of course but the typical burglar is certainly going to have to work for his reward.

Dogs work.

OP just hide your stuff well. Anything less than a heavy duty, bolted to the floor, can/will be compromised/stolen.

I've got the small gunvault rude recommended. The main reason is to keep the kid and his friends safe. He hasn't shown any interest but I do not want to take a chance. A pry bar will defeat it but that shows their intent.

and a second hidden safe to stash the stuff you don't want to lose when they hold you and demand you "open the safe".

This is why my wife and I bought one too. So we could store SS cards for us and the kids, tax documents, birth certificates ect. Before they were kind of scattered around the house in different places and now they are all in one place for when we need them.

Cut a hole in the concrete closet floor and encase a floor safe in concrete.

I have gun safes. Does that count?

I do to. Guns, valuables, important documents, external hard disks etc and off course ammo all go in the gun safe. Since it is over 500+ lbs and bolted to the foundation I don't think anybody is going to cart it off.
