Sounds like you have two kinds of purchases to think about in the future. You'll have to get creative with the space needed though.

nah, i somewhat spoke in jest; while I do want one, i honestly don't think i will get a gun. My friends all shoot, i don't, i just borrow their's.

anyway, I can't bolt it to the ground, since I am renting the apartment.

i have one. there's nothing valuable in it though. just decoy.
the valuables are either in the wall outlets or broken dvd players, broken stuff that they prolly wont ever care for. on the flip side, a friend's wife threw out all his junk electronics n there were valuables in them. ouch.

I just got a $100 one at lowes. Its a chinsey cheap one that doesn't come with a mount kit. I just drilled some holes in the bottom of it with a regular drill bit. Then drove 6" 1/2" lags through down into the floor boards/joists. I keep a few hand guns and a couple thousand in it. A skilled theif could break into it in no time but the average junkie burgler won't bother with it I figure.

What about bolting it to a wall stud?

I do to. Guns, valuables, important documents, external hard disks etc and off course ammo all go in the gun safe. Since it is over 500+ lbs and bolted to the foundation I don't think anybody is going to cart it off.
This is the answer...mine was around 500lbs BEFORE I loaded it up with guns and ammo and documents...bonus that it had pass through power and ethernet to keep my NAS drives protected
