Couldn't get in on the Touchpad sales so I'm still looking to buy a cheap tablet. This might just fit the bill. I'd been considering picking up a refurb Nook Color for $180, but even that seems like a high price for an old piece of hardware that will probably be refreshed soon. Rather have a newer, more powerful one for $250. Or at the very least, wait for the next Nook Color to come out and pick up an old one for really cheap.

Really just looking forward to release to see if it can be hacked. If it can only run the Amazon app market and you can't get stock Android along with the Android Market on there, then I'm not interested.

Product page is up - mystery solved. It has a virtual keyboard controlled by the five way keypad, not unlike entering text on a PS3 or xbox controller. I think that's a decent solution, considering its not often I actually type on the thing. I'm sold...literally, order placed.

Oh yea, and a pre-order for two Fires. WTF am I going to do with them? I don't know. Maybe I'll keep one and give one as a Christmas present to someone? Goddamnit, I have a problem.

I can't find the product page - I wanna get in on the Touch 3G now, just in case. I have a month to cancel if anything.

EDIT: Ah crap. The $149 one has ads. Forget that. Dammit.
 
Not getting a Fire since I have a Transformer, but I'm going to get two of those $79 Kindle's as Christmas presents for my Mom and mother in law for sure.
 
So Kindle Touch at $99, non-touch at $79 and Kindle Fire at $199 with an IPS display, 1024x600 res, dual core, and all that other stuff? At $300 cheaper than the lowest ipad methinks Amazon is going to sell alot of these.

Keep in mind the $99 Kindle Touch and $79 regular Kindle are both with ads ("Special Offers"). They're only supposed to display when you're not reading but just FYI. The Kindle Fire doesn't have ads, I guess unless you're running an ad-supported Android app on it.

I was just looking at the video Amazon has of it. It looks pretty nice. I wish they had a special offers version of it though.
 
Other Android tablet manufacturers are taking it between the cheeks. First the $99 TouchPad and now the $199 Fire, talk about getting slapped around. I can't see how they'll compete at this rate. Apple has to be sitting back and laughing their asses off right now.

Keeping my Nook color and just reading any kindle books on the kindle app.

I wouldn't mind seeing the silk browser on it, however.

On first thought, this is a non-issue with Amazon Cloud Drive. On second thought, lack of 3g makes this an issue. :hmm:
 
Also this is only a 7" screen... Ok for a reader, but not really competing with Ipad or Transformer here.....

I don't think it was intended to. Amazon isn't out for selling overpriced hardware. They want to sell a content device where you buy their content. They want to sell a lot of these to sell more content.

Yep. There will be some overlap between this and an iPad just by virtue of it being a media consumption device, but I don't suspect that it'll take anything more than a nibble out of iPad's massive market share.

I think it's marketed towards people who wouldn't even consider getting an iPad, so more growth in the tablet market.
 
Actually more excited about the Kindle Touch announcements. I use a Kindle 3 now and pre-ordered a touch version /w special offers for $99. An upgrade all around: easier touch interface, way more battery life, and what sounds like a lot of potential with the "X-Ray" features. (I did also pre-order a Fire tablet, it may or may not replace my iPad1)

If Amazon sells a 10" tablet for $300 next year, that'll take a huge bight out of iPad sales.

Quite ironic, the most popular Android tablet will have nothing to do with Google. Amazon's product page lists the word "Android" exactly one, when mentioning the "Amazon App Store for Android". I wouldn't be surprised if this outsells all other Android tablets combined.

Yeah the 8GB of non expandble storage just kills it for me. I don't want to have to deal with the amazon cloud stuff. After seeing W8 all the android tablets are screwed anyways. Full featured OS/Browser FTW.

Sometimes the "special offers" are actually crazy coupons though - like $100 off a TV, 25% off certain cameras, $10 off video games, etc. I actually kind of want to purposefully get one with ads to get the coupons 😛
