I may get one for my wife for christmas, depending on how it looks when its released. We've got one kindle and were considering getting another. This may be an interesting alternative.

It's a decent amount faster than the NC which is good. After having a NC and a REAL tablet, Android really benefits with some dual core oomph. All the OCing in the world couldn't take the inherit lagginess away, which for me really ruined the usefulness as a tablet. I reformatted back to stock Nook firmware and it makes for a great reader, and now I have a real 10" tablet. The Kindle Fire (bleh to the name) and the Nook Color 2 will be good products, as the 7" tablet market is barren.

We'll see. I'm very happy with my NC running CM7 now, but I would like something with a little bit more processing power since I tend to watch Netflix, Slingbox, and when it works, Hulu, on it.

The NC is practically an open device as far as hacking goes. If Amazon doesn't try hard to lock theirs down, I might switch, especially if it gets me my next year of Prime included. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the B&N product and would likely go for their refresh instead.

Or I'll wait and see which one actually gets a community ICS release first.

Talk about a crazy business model.

Android: create an OS and give it away as a loss leader, in order to funnel people towards Google services and make money through ad impressions & data collection.

Kindle Fire: take the Android OS, strip out all the parts that make money for Google, put it on a tablet, and sell it as a loss-leader in order to get people consuming Amazon's content.

Not crazy at all, videogame consoles have done it as well for a long time. It's all about marketshare and how important it is.

I think he was refering to Google getting screwed on the deal, i.e. with Amazon stripping out the google stuff they won't make any money on them but did the leg work putting the OS together.

If it has a 10" screen and dual core for $300 it will sell like crazy and really bring the price of other Android tablet down. I don't think it will affect Apple at all though, those that want an iPad will still get an iPad.

No. I really hope this Amazon Android tablet fails and all developers leave the Amazon Android App market. I have never purchased anything from Amazon App market and never will. Do not support Amazon App market. Buy your Android apps from the Google market where you'll get latest update.
http://shiftyjelly.wordpress.com/2011/08/02/amazon-app-store-rotten-to-the-core/

This. The Amazon Appstore for Android has been a crapshoot. Even with the free apps, which tend to screw over the developer. The apps also don't play well with the Android Market either, and don't get the latest updated from Amazon Appstore. So you end up with Update Available in Market, but get declined if you try to DL it from there and no update available in the Amazon Appstore.

I will, however, defend their right to use the name 'appstore'. :p

On the Kindle Fire, I'm going to withhold any final judgement until I see the final product. But, B&N has been built a fine product in their nook lineup, they've supported them well, integrated them well into their B&M stores, etc. I'm more likely to consider the NC2, but I've little reason to move from my Nook First Edition at this point. I'd like better support for full color magazines and such, but I'm not sure what advantage an NC2 would have over any of the 10in tablets. Other than cost.

amazon sold out of kindles when they started at $399. at $199 this thing will sell out as well.

books, music and a few other features most people care about. i still remember when the drone at costco tried to sell me a xoom. he said i should buy it because it was dual core

its going to be 300 not 199

Bloomberg is reporting $199. Either they jumped the gun and are going to have a lot of egg on their face, or that's the price.

The same piece is also reporting that there will be an $80 Kindle as well. It's probably going to be an insane holiday quarter for Amazon if that's the case.

Edit: Looks like the $79 Kindle prediction was right, and there's a $100 touch model now as well. Definitely going to be a lot of these given as Christmas gifts.

That Kindle with the Lifetime 3G doesn't look bad. If the browser is actually capable - that's going to be my next device. Speed isn't that much of a concern to me.

There's a lot of talk floating that this is just a stopgap until they actually get the device they want out in Q12012.

wouldn't surprise me. these things take 2-3 years to design and build and things changed pretty fast in the last few years

If someone is pissed, it's got to be other hardware manufacturers. Who's going to want to pay $400-$500 for their Android tablets when Amazon's is only $200 and has some interesting/nice Amazon services added into the mix.

Amazon can afford to subsidize their tablets if people buy enough content from the various Amazon stores over the life of the device. Samsung, et al. have no such store and obviously can't afford to give the hardware away.

I'm conflicted on these new Kindles. I don't want a touch screen Kindle. I would find that irritating, especially if I'm trying to hold the thing one handed. However, I'm a big fan of the 3G in my Kindle 2, and I'm concerned that they got rid of the keyboard. How do you even search for new books if it doesn't have a touch screen keyboard on there? Does this mean it no longer has a browser? Hmm....

Oh, and Kindle Fire looks awesome. Its going to rock the tablet market. Until Windows 8 comes out next year, it looks like we've only got two players in this tablet market. I find it hard to fathom why most people would buy something like the HTC Flyer or the Playbook when this can be had for just $199. And lol @ them seemingly stripping out everything Google.
