that's the problem with NVidia these days, seems like whenever you get the new card, a bigger, better one is just a tiny bit away.

I wonder how long it will be before Nvidia's innovations start to slow down... The thing about vid cards is that one company, such as 3dfx, shoots their wad and dies out. Nvidia may be putting out a new design every 6-12 months, but how long can they keep it up?

I read that the GeForce 3 MX will be out this year, but a GF3 Ultra or something similar (with 128 MB) won't be out until Q1 2002.

Damn, game developers haven't even taken advantage of GF3's capabilities yet and they are coming out with GF4 plans already??

Game developers haven't even fully taken advantage of the ORIGINAL GeForce's capabilities! (sort of) Yeah, most games I get these days take advantage of the hardware T&L engine. ;) Suuuuuure.

I've heard that the GF3 supports a maximum of 64MB RAM. Meaning even if they wanted to, they couldn't toss that extra 128 on there. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think that in a high end system we're slowly closing in on needing 64MB of video ram and 128MB of system ram... optimal requirements would be 128/256. maybe even 128/384

The GF3 is already at least 6 months or more ahead of the competition so they could slow down the release of new products. I wouldn't wait for the 128 meg version. 64 megs is enough. The only problem with the gf3 is that it really can't do FSAA at 1600x1200 at a reasonable frame rate. Yes, I do think that fsaa is needed even at 1600x1200 and I wouldn't drop down to 1280x1024 just to use fsaa.

hell yeah i really need a 128MB Geforce 3 to run 32-bit 2048x1536 resolution with FSAA on my 28" monitor

I say figure out what you need, then make the decision...this is how it boils down for me:

Every generation of Nvidia cards has new capabilities. Within each generation you get varying performance levels. There are cards for the budget gamer, the average gamer, and the hardcore gamer. With the GF2 it was the MX, the GTS, and the Ultra. If you think about it, besides FPS, there's no real difference between these cards. They all have the same visual capabilities, its just a question of how many FPS you're willing to pay for.

I consider myself an average gamer so I'm gonna stick with the mid-level cards. So I'll probably be buying a GF3 when it dips below $300.

Keep in mind when you think about price ranges, even a budget gamer's price range can be beyond that of a normal person who buys a computer for non-gaming applications.
