I'm a CS major at RIT, and am going to have to pay for tuition and all of my living expenses myself since my parents barely get by on what they earn. Anyway, my tuition and books end up at around $10K a year after the school's grants and then my living expenses are probably going to end up around $15K a year. Do any of you know of any places to look for scholarships or private lenders that will let you borrow more than just the cost of tuition? Thanks for the help!

the govmint will let you borrow from them. Federal Direct Loans. Subsidized and Unsubsidized. Go to your schools financial aid office and apply. You should be able to get them. There's also a Pell grant that may help out (not sure if you're currently getting that). Govmint money is good. Low interest rates. And on some loans, they don't start collecting until you're out of college.

If you don't apply for federal subsidized loans, then you are a sucka that does not deserve to be in college.

I'm starting grad school next semester, and I too have to start paying for my education :(

Try your school's financial aid department, I'm sure they can help :)

w00 i go to RIT too..i don't see how you can be worrying about money when there's a the big problem of NO FREAKIN HOT GIRLS!

seriously now, i dont pay for college myself...but this is the breakup of my money spent here..

5K Rit alumni scholarship
5K Presidential Scholarship
4K in Federal Perkins Loan
3K or so from a Subsidized direct loan..

that leaves my family paying like 9K...2-3K i'll have to take care when i get a job.
I also gotta pay for books and supplies myself.

But yeah there are plenty of banks out there that will lend you some cash for your education, so just run a search on the web and you should be good.

The Federal loans that I have will only cover $5.5K a year, so I need a bit more.

Yobarman, what'd you have to do to for the Alumni and Presidential scholarships, and the Perkins loan? Also, are you staying in the dorms or at home?

Apparently those scholarships were from me being "smart" I'm six hours from home so i yeah im in the dorms. Try the financial aid office, RIT is really good with helping kids out with money.

Check with your financial aid department. Then there is a book at the local bookstore that should have a comprehensive list of scholarships out there for students. I don't remember the stats, but I think ppl say 50% of all scholarships aren' t applied for. Check to see if you qualify for 1st generation scholarships (u didn't mention if u were or not), if your parent's place of income has scholarships for employee familys, any minority/financial/ethnica based scholarships. If you are adept at what you know, u could argue a way to teach at the university, and get tuition reduction. Be like a TA or Lab instructor. Churches give scholarships too.

If you can't anymore, then well, find a job. I know a few friends in vegas that work during the summer as strippers and make enough money to last them the entire year for school (tuition, books, living expenses + more). I"m not saying do that, but just an example.

hope that helps
