Anyone getting any fishing done? (Pics)

Here along the Gulf Coast we get about three or four weeks of nice weather in between "winter" and summer. It's prime time for crappie fishing. Last Saturday a buddy from work and I caught about 45 fish, mostly crappie. Friday we went out and got about 16.

Anyone else been doing any fishing or anything else fun outside? Here are some pics I took. They're not great, but whatever. They're 1920x1440 PNGs, so bring your bandwidth.

Steel-head fishing on the Salmon river in Oswego county (upstate NY). Eh, it sucked. The water was surprisingly warm for March, which was nice. I landed one baby steel-head (maybe 1/2 pound) and had one decent sized (5-7 lbs) on the line for about ten seconds. Not really good enough for a day and a half of fishing.

The stormy weather spoiled my plan of going fishing this weekend. We were going to drop a few prawn & crab traps on our way out fishing for cods.

I'm planing a few weekends fishing for cod/halibut/salmon this spring/summer.

Cods are getting large around here around 20 lbs (they aren't many 35-40 lbs that we used to get many years back).

Halibuts a round here are around 40~45 lbs (occasionally we get a few 60~65 lbs, but I haven't seen 80+ lbs for a long time).

Around here 'game fish' fishing shuts down due to DNR restrictions between the end of March and sometime in May. Not a whole lot going on with that, but panfish should be coming to life with our recent warm spell.

We have a small pond not too far from our home that the DNR stocks with rainbow trout every April, I'll probably head out there one of these days soon.

Nice catches OP!

I've been to a trout park three times this year, after fishing season opened on March 1. Hopefully I'll be there on Monday, too.

Trout are stocked daily depending on the amount of people they anticipate fishing (2 per person). However, the daily limit is 4. I catch my limit nearly every time out, but I've been going since dad took me as a kid (30+years). It's a blast using ultra light tackle. 🙂

I never keep anything under 10" so I average 5-7 fish per trip. I usually bring home fish around 12"-13". Anything bigger would be hard to fit in the frying pan.

The stream has been up this year so the water is murky and runs fast, making it a little more challenging. Typically the water is clear and you can sight fish.

Actually today would be a nice day for ice fishing. Maybe bring a flotation device, "just in case". The ice is a bit thin.

Getting ready for crappie fishing. I'm not much of a fan of catching stocked trout in the local trout streams - minimal skill or technique is needed. Plus, I prefer eating crappie a hell of a lot more than trout.

Have gone camping twice and have struck out twice going lake fishing. But it's only the start of the season and I haven't really tried. I need me a canoe or bass boat.

Not much happening around the PNW though it is getting warmer outside. Last time I went was about a month ago for some fly fishing on a local lake. All small ones but was productive. Can't wait until the temps warm up to the 60's-70's to get the bass and bluegill moving.

Do me a favor OP, pinch those barbs 🙂

I didn't go once this summer 🙁

As a side note, I lament the growth of PNG usage on the internet. Not because PNG isn't a good format (it's an excellent one) but because people are using it for the wrong types of images. Please people, stop saving your photographs as PNG files. The file size is about 5-10 times as big as it would be in JPG for virtually no increase in quality. PNG is a superior format for images of text, screenshots, vector-like art, etc. JPG is the superior format for photographs.

/soapbox 🙂

Nice pics OP, makes me feel like a fool for not getting out more in the summer.

Hah!

You know, I wanted to save them out as JPEGs, but I used Photoshop Elements to resize the pics, and I couldn't get them to be nice quality JPEGs. It was like 1am, so I said to hell with it and used PNGs. I'm going to fix them tonight.

I had hoped that I could get by without anyone noticing the huge size. 😛

I have never been able to wrap my head around fishing. It is such an incredible waste of time. I know, people claim it is relaxing and that is how they want to spend their free time. I prefer relaxing activities that actually accomplish things. Hell, I have a lake house with 150 feet of lakefront and don't really fish. I like to eat it I just don't want to waste the time catching it. A trot line is the most effective way to accomplish that and I don't even do that....although I might start since I really miss having a freezer full of nice catfish.

I couldn't wait for the Walley/Nothern/Bass openers in May, so I went this weekend for some catfish and carp. Zero bites. My dad pulled in about an 18" catfish and my brother lost a sucker while pulling it in. Hopefully this summer will be a whole lot better than last summer.

It takes just enough thought to not be mind numbing, but it's relaxing. I don't know, I grew up fishing. If I don't go, I start having more and more vivid dreams about it until I go.

It's okay. Not everyone can be perfect.
