I had ordered one from mwave last week that should have arrived on Thursday, but somehow it went out of stock and I was not notified. I cancelled my order a few days later while checking order status. I will not order from mwave anytime soon for hosing me like that, and charging my CC without having the merchandise in their hands. I will buy one from newegg in a few weeks most likely.

This post over at rage3d has some first impressions. An ATI employee pops into the thread to address a couple of issues.

I have four. So far they are working great except for the Battlefield 1942 issue. However, that and a couple of control panel issues are due to be fixed in the 7.76 driver release. This card works very well for those with a AMD dually.

He has four because he has 7 systems that Bingo seemingly likes to keep very updated. From how I've seen Bingo's systems "evolve" I think it is quiet clear that he likes to keep things updated and have the newest and greatest hardware powering his systems. His gaming systems always have the fastest video card and his processors are all among the fastest you can buy (and then he overclocks some of them pushing the performance even more...) If I had the money to do it I surely would, but I'm currnetly a student so I'll have to wait, lol. :)

Doesn't seem like his list of rigs is fully updated, I only count two Radeon 9700 Pros listed in the systems...I do see two systems still packing the slow and crappy GeForce 4 Ti 4400 and 4600 ;), I bet I know where the two other 9700 Pros are going, unless Bingo is going to add two more rigs to his current list of seven, lol. So I guess he'll have only the Parhelia and the 9700...?

Hey Bingo, in your opinion, how's the 2D IQ of the 9700 compare to the Parhelia?

I'm not sure what it is called in the U.S, but here it's called Civilian IT-Engineer (in Swedish). I was just wondering if you think that's a good education for developing games, especially in the U.S?

GrimReefer,

The text is invisible the majority of the time and consistent program locking after 10 minutes of play for me. ATI has confirmed this issue has been fixed in the 7.76 drivers. They are due to be released next week or sooner.

Bunnyfubbles,

I am weak when it comes to PC hardware. ;) I usually buy just about everything that comes out just to further my experience with the various components. I tend not to list my ECS mb/SIS video combinations but I do try all levels of hardware at one time or another. I have one 9700 that is not in a system yet. I am hoping to receive a KT400/XP2600+ setup this coming weekend. If not it will go into another dually that I built this weekend until the new setups arrive.
The 2d aspects of the 9700 are excellent. The sharpness of the text is improved and matches the Parhelia on my Sony F520s. However, the Parhelia still has better color saturation and depth. The Parhelia is not a bad card and even though you do not get insane frame rates I have yet to try a game that has not been fluid and perfectly acceptable to play. That said the 9700 is an incredible card and I would not hesitate to recommend it. :)

How does the 9700 "scale" with CPU's? I am building a new PC this week, and I want to get the best p4 CPU for the buck that will feed the 9700. :D

The 9700 scales very well. In my limited testing with a P4 running at 3.026 the card is still "cpu" dependent in certain games at 1280x1024 and below.

Bingo, where do you go to get all this hardware that hasn't been released yet? The 9700, 2600 xp, the kt400.... I can't find these things anywhere that aren't preorders, and actually, thats only the 9700. How can I get all this sweet machinery? :D

GrimReefer,

I usually receive my items as they are shipping into distribution. It helps to work in the PC Industry and travel to the Pacific rim. ;) You have PM on the listed items.

Bingo,

Can you please enlighten us and tell us if the 9700 has hardware MPEG-2 encoding capability? And if so, is it any good?

I'm looking for a good MPEG-2 encoding solution, which could be coupled with a DVD burner, since I'm shooting a lot of digital video and also need to back up some old laserdiscs.

Thanks much! :)

I too am looking for the Radeon 9700 in stock somewhere... Most places on pricewatch don't have them in yet, and most of the stores also originate in California, so I have to pay tax. All I'm asking for is 350 out the door. :| Some places are still holding out on dropping the P4 2.53 too. No one has reached the 240 mark, most are still charging in the upper 200's. Doh.

AnitaPeterson,

The 9700 has hardware MPEG-2 decoding. The AIW version will have full hardware MPEG-2 encoding capability. I have a DVD-RW drive arriving on Friday and will try various video programs with this card.

Most money printing machines only have a throughput of $5/minute. If you overclock it you can get to 7$, or maybe $8 if you're lucky.
