no, what you meant to say is you thank us. :p

OMG. Destrokers shortest post ever! I am so proud of you.:awe:

I have to wait until Wednesday. My patience is testing my wallet. It was cheaper than a Verizon B&M store. Instant vs. Cost. arghhhh.

An OTA update for the Motorola Droid is starting today.

Here are the issues it supposedly fixes. I haven't received the update just yet (I'm in the MD, DC, VA metro area) so I can't confirm any of the fixes:

Confirmation by BGR if needed:

I need my echo/static bug to be fixed for the phone to be perfect for me (with the exception being the physical keyboard). Crossing my fingers...

you can buy through Verizon at the 1-year contract price if you don't mind the extra cost and 1 less year...

I thought that I'd ask this here since you all have the Droid. A friend of mine was going to get it this weekend, but left the store pissed & ready to leave VZ for good. It was all over the data plan. He thought, (like me) that he would just need the $30 plan, and that the $45 plan was for exchange use.

However, the Verizon store guy told him that he needed the $45 plan, because the $30 plan was just for email & web surfing, and that if he had that plan with the Droid, the added charge for using apps with the Droid would far surpass the $45 plan. I just checked their site, and the unlimited data price is $45. So what's the story?

wait what?!

whoever he talked to, if I am understanding the text clearly, is either ridiculously retarded, or is hoping the buyer is retarded.

Both plans offer unlimited data.

Both plans are also the exact same plan. EXCEPT, the $45/month plan is for subscribers who are charging their service to a business account (as in: the business pays for your wireless bill). That is it. You can do everything to the same "unlimited" end, AND even use Exchange, on the $30/month data plan, as long as it's a personal account. Doesn't matter what you DO with the phone, if the bill is paid by you, as in it is a personal billing address and personal credit card (if charging to CC).

The Droid does nothing special with data, it does no more with data service than any other smartphone. You can stream YouTube and Pandora all day, Verizon can't bill you anything more than that $30 bill.
HOWEVER

That does not include Tethering. Tethering is the act of linking your phone to a laptop or other mobile device, and using the phone as a modem to access the internet. If you want to do this, you have to pay an additional fee (I think it's another $30), AND you have a 5gb cap (even if it is labeled unlimited, though I am unsure if it is).

If you aren't tethering, and are on a personal account... feel free to use as much data as you would like, using whatever applications you like. Still $30/month for data access.

Hope that clears it up.

I hear what you guys are saying, as it's exactly what we both thought. However, I can't find it on their web page. I just went through the buying process, and the option to choose is vague as well. I can see many people new to smartphones choosing the unlimited $45 plan. I see even more saying WTF, and going with another phone because of it too.

He was going to try ordering it online, & speaking to a rep there. I'll see how he made out in the am.

My guess is that either A) It was a new sales guy, or B) He's a shady dirt bag trying to get a bigger commission off an ill informed customer.

I believe in Hanlon's Razor:
"Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."

This. Sadly, many people will try to sell that which they don't even understand. When there are multiple policies in the system, obviously the most expensive is the best, and there must be a reason.

I think the malice might be in whoever designed the system, as including the $45 plan in the list of possible options is a little shady. They should only have that option selectable if the service is being billed to a Business account. But I guess I should still relegate this to stupidity on someone's behalf, as there might not be a specific method of distinguishing between Business-billed accounts and personal-billed accounts.

Just know, absolutely for sure, he only needs the $30 plan if he is paying for it himself. That's it. Don't bother trying to wrestle that information out of the sales reps, I'm fairly certain it is going to take talking to a manager to get that information. The sales reps are just out for the numbers, they don't necessarily need to know everything. They'll refer to their manager when they don't know something, but sadly, in most cases they'll try and take on the subject themselves with bold confidence (they are salesmen after all :p).

All of the internet has a few hidden treasure threads that boldly clarify this, often with the help of a few knowledgeable service reps replying in agreement. Thus, and after many taking the bold step of just trying the $30 plan with a little reassurance from peers, it has proven to be successful: personal accounts need only the $30 plan to get unlimited data service on the phone, for every phone, no matter what the data consists of. All features of the $45 plan are in the $30 plan, the more costly plan is simply for business billing accounts, and this is simply the case of Verizon taking advantage of the business paying for services. They can get more money without any questions asked, so it works.
