My work blocks all web mail sites and all the normal ISP ones (Comcast, Verizon, etc). Whats funny is that gmail.com is blocked, but mail.google.com is not. Try that.

if i go to google.com and login that way, i can get to it

but "gmail.com" is blocked

It's up to your IT department as to what they allow and what they don't. I used to have to Remote Desktop to my home PC via port 23 and get to gmail from there when I needed it. Current job has it open though.
