Have a friend who is from Springfield that I would like to go visit but I'm worried about racism in the area. Been doing some research and it looks like the KKK is pretty prevalent in Missouri. Also sounds like there's a lot of corruption of sorts with different law enforcement departments in different parts of Missouri. Any experiences? Is this all true?

BTW..I'm half Filipino.

Listen here asshole. She's white. You really think that a white person would know if racism exists. Of course people are going to be friendly to her, she's white (and hot I might add). I'm asking for information from different people that live in Missouri. So in other words, you can see yourself out of this thread because you're not providing any helpful information for me to make a decision to travel there or not.

So do you think your car will get torched or you will be shot at there? Is there really that bad of racism in the US still?

From what I gather, that yes, racism is still big, especially in the South. I've never had to deal with racism, ever. She did say that the headquarters for the KKK is in Harrison Arkansas which is about 1.5 hours away from where she lives. So after hearing that I did a google search for hate crimes in Springfield MO and came up with a host of different topics regarding racism and bigotry in the MO.

Maybe you shouldn't be taking your views of the world from paranoid delusional people on the internet?

Not to mention, I don't know how being white magically makes you blind to racism (I mean its just not possible to be racist toward white people now is it).

I've lived in KC, MO for a little over a year now and haven't come up on anything like that. Even going down to southern border around Neosho for a float trip, didn't have any problems. Don't think you have to be terribly worried bout it.

Common sense? How am I supposed to use common sense of an area I've never been? Unless I get people's first hand knowledge of living in the area? Hmm? Hmm?

Stay in Washington. The South isn't that bad but the chip on your shoulder will probably get you into trouble long before anyone notices your skin color.

While my guess is that theres a bit more discrimination in MO then on the the east/west coast, I seriously doubt the OP has to worry much about being lynched by the KKK.

Edit: Now getting beaten up for being a dork could be an entirely different story! :p

huh? Are you implying if there is a white supremacist group in the area his friend must be a racist too just because she is white? Are all whites supposed to act as one and same person? Somehow his post made a whole lot more sense to me than yours.

I think the question is valid. Before you question his logic, consider how safe you would feel about taking a trip to the middle of Harlem, for instance. Granted, it is known to be a predominantly poor and unsafe neighborhood to begin with. But I am sure you have something else to worry about if you were white.

Nope, not racist. Most of my friends are white. Thanks for your input.

You're not seeing my point of view about people and racism and maybe i'm not explaining it well.

what i meant to say, i obviously didnt say it right, was that he said that because she is white, she would be oblivious to racism in her area

Common sense is just that...common. You don't have to be in any one place to use it, you can use it anywhere (that is, you can if you actually have it).

What I'm afraid of? Afraid of being treated differently than anyone else due to the color of my skin. In Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, never had to worry about it. Not once. Now if I'm going to consider traveling to MO for a while I want to make sure I'm treated equally. Does that make sense? Paranoid, maybe. Justified, maybe.

Common sense and racism...I'm not seeing the relevance. Common sense meaning that since racism exists in Missouri that I should already know the answer to my questions? Or?

which I think has some truth to it. unless you are handicapped you wouldnt know what it would feel like to have your reserved parking spots occupied by random people. unless you are a woman you wouldnt really know what it would feel like getting sexually harassed by men... the list goes on

Well theres no way to garantee that everyone you run into is going to treat exactly the way you would like them to anywhere you go, however I can garantee that if you go looking for discrimination you'll find it.

The bottom line is that if you stay in the metropolitan areas you shouldn't have any problems at all & aside from a possible dumb remark or two you shouldn't have any trouble wherever you go.

Racism won't cause you any problem in Missouri but your attitude will. ;)

Hey, there are even *gasp* interracial couples in Missouri.
