These happen heaps in cryptic crosswords. An anagram is a word made from the letters of another word... So "step" is an anagram of "pest". Cryptic clues that involve anagrams often contain the following words; split, break, cooks, broken, decipher and out.
Find the clues that use these words, and look for the anagram to give you the answer.
(2) Initials;
The words 'to start' and 'first' mean we take the initials of some words in the clue to give the answer we're looking for.
(3) Sounds like;
Clues that say 'sounds like' mean that the answer we want sounds like another part of the clue.
