Anyone find it odd that it's hard to find timely info on-line about Carnivore?

Why do you find that odd? Why would the FBI let out secrets on one of it's most important programs? (assuming this is a discussion about that - if not, just pass me by, I'm a blithering idiot)

I find it odd rbloedow, because I wanted to find out some recent info about the Carnivore program by the FBI and all I find is links that are two or three years old! 😕

You mean the Echelon system??

[ to anyone that gets the reference]

isn't echelon for telephone and carnivore for email.

I remember listening to a morning shock jock and he did some conspiracy theorys and one of his was Echelon. Then about 4 years after him shouting about echelon and what it does, 24 hours ran a story to confirm it.

It's a custom built packet sniffer, BFD. They acquire a subpoena to gather the information and put a black box at the ISP that sniffs data that matches the information contained in their subpoena. Hell, your ISP sees more dirt on you on a daily basis than the FBI does.

How do I know so much? There was an entire chapter on it in my Ethereal book. It's a packet sniffer, that is all. Nothing more, nothing less. Does it allow for some amazing data capture and granularity, you bet. Huge, black ops secret? Nope.

In fact, there are COTS (commercial off the shelf) applications that do the same damn thing, only they haven't been blessed off on by the government to include some of the highest ranking judges and attorneys in the nation.
