Just filed my taxes online, and my refund is half what I got the last 2 years, despite me paying more in taxes!

I got about $1200 last year, and this year I will be getting $600. The only difference is that I put about $2,000 into a 401K plan this year and I didnt do anything last year. Does anyone know why I would get half as much in my return this year than last year?

Also, FFFFFFFFF the government

Did you do a line by line comparison between last year's filing and this year's filing?
that will tell you at least where the difference is.

Without that, any explanation is shooting in the dark.

If you can provide the form line #s where the difference is, then someone may have ideas.
And you may find that you made a mistake somewhere.

Good idea, I just did a line by line comparison and the only differences are that I somehow made about $75 more this year and my federal witholding is exactly $616 more last year than it was this year. Some quick mental math later............and I think I found the missing $616 from this years return :p

Thanks!

Filed mine a week or two ago. Getting back about $1000 between federal and state (CA).

Last year got $1000 fed, $400 state.

Taxable income was $5k more this year and Fed took about $1k more this year.

I filed a few days ago. State & fed already accepted. I owed $35 to state and will be getting a federal return just over $1k.

Waiting for e-trade to release 1099s so I can finish mine. They never release anything until mid Feb. and it's annoying.

No, stupid employer hasn't hand out W2s yet.
They have to do it by the end of Feb (I thought. Ditto to e-trade - thought they had to be in the mail by Jan 31.) But, I cannot figure out why employers wait until the end of Jan to do them? Maybe if it was all done by hand, but you'd think they could press a button on Jan 2, and all the W2s would be printed out without any further action needed.

I am not an accountant. So, I really don't understand how a company doesn't have an electronic record of how much you made, and how much tax was withheld, ready to print at a moment's notice.

(Or, do the companies hang onto that cash, earning interest, waiting until the last possible minute to electronically hand that principle to the IRS, and hanging onto the interest for a big party in the accounting department. Any CPAs want to chime in?)

I don't have any of my 1099s yet, so no.

And I won't be filing until the end of March.

E-trade's note on this:

In accordance with IRS deadlines, your tax documents will be mailed and/or posted online. 2014 Forms 1099-R and 1099-Q will be available on or before February 2, 2015. 2014 Consolidated Form 1099 will be available on or before February 17, 2015.

My company is good though, payroll goes through ADP and I got my W-2s weeks ago.

Waiting on child care figures from my son's primary daycare.

Each year I make slightly more and get slightly less back in taxes. I figure it'll all even out in a few years and then I'll have to intentionally add more taxes taken out. :(

I imagine almost all of them do have that information ready to go, but for the larger ones it takes time to process all the flows and gather all the information, and there needs to be time built in for adjustments and fixes.

Nope. The IRS requires employers to deposit payroll taxes, ss taxes etc on a monthly or bi-weekly basis as it gets withheld. When they send out W-2's doesn't have any bearing on the deposit schedule.

I can't file my taxes anytime soon because my broker (Schwab) takes its sweet time to get forms out. Gotta wait for everything to come in before I can file :(

Lame. I just logged into my TD Ameritrade account to see if my 1099 was there, and apparently my account is negative $37.23 and put me in a margin call because of some $38.00 "mandatory reorganization fee" they charged me when a stock I have did a reverse split. Pisses me off, because I only have like $50 of stocks with them, so when I sell, it's just going to these assholes.

Guess I'm just selling all my shit, fuck them.

My 1099 is available, though :D

Always takes bloody ages for my company to send my T4 out. I think it usually comes in like April, or whatever the deadline is, it's like a week before.

But this reminds me I need to buy RRSPs as while I do buy some throughout the year it's probably not enough to avoid paying taxes. I'd have to sit down with my tax person and find out how much I need to buy then only buy that amount. I usually make a shot in the dark and buy a couple grand worth and I'm ok.
