i get heartburn. i've tried a few things from tums to the generic zantac. they don't work fast enough.

i was at a homeopathic store which is not my usual MO, in fact my first time at one, and i saw a bottle that said it stopped heartburn. it was apple cider vinegar with garlic and ginger juice. it made no sense to me, stop heartburn with an acid? it's worked all 3 times i've used it. heartburn gone within 30-60 seconds. oh and it's labeled as being Amish.

go figure.

Believe it or not, apple cider vinegar IS an effective treatment for heartburn. It's counter-intuitive, but it seems to work.

I have chronic GERD, so I'm pretty much an expert on heartburn.

The older you get, the less effective the seal is on your stomach that keeps in your gastric juices. After a while, they're seep up into your esophagus and cause pain/swelling, or (in my case) scaring.

As far as treatments, Tums/Rolaids are your first line of defense. These are enough to ward off simple heartburn.

If you're getting heartburn frequently, omeprazole is your friend. The generic form is around the same price as Tylenol, and works within 30-60 minutes of taking it. It's a good "this food is going to kill me" prep :)

If you're being kept awake at night, try to stop eating by 7pm, and maybe start a regimen of slow acting acid reducers like cimetidine before going to bed for a couple of weeks.

Foods that set off my heartburn:
- Starchy or overly sweet foods
- dry/dense meats (chicken breast, pork chops, etc)
- tomato sauces or salsa
- foods with lots of vinegar
- heavily seasoned foods

I'm actually going to have to go in to get my esophagus stretched because I let my heartburn go too long and it caused the opening to my stomach to shrink from scar tissue, meaning food often gets "stuck" if I eat too much or too fast, resulting in severe pain and vomiting up the stuck food. :(

I have a totally acid reflux problem lately and the thing that sucks is it's not really the food I eat or how full I am. For some reason, I am getting some acid out of my stomach which triggers my gag reflex.

My doc put me on omeprazole 40mg to protect me it's not really stopping my issue.

I just got to get back into training again and figure out how to deal with a detached dominant bicep.

Yes, when you get older, your Lower Esophageal Sphincter fails to fully close and acid starts spurting out. Best treatment is to take acid reducers for a few months to give it time to heal.

I battled it for years and for a long time thought it was the common tomato acid type foods (pizza, spaghetti, etc.). Then, one day I read an article on a health website that suggested it could be dairy.

I started thinking and realized that I typically drink a glass of milk with spaghetti (don't ask, something I started as a kid) and that pizza was covered in cheese. Once I stopped consuming dairy products in the few hours right before bed, my problem solved itself and I can eat tomato based foods again before bedtime without issue.

Mine stopped once I stopped eating gluten.

Yeah food allergies stink. I went my whole life with a smorgasbord of issues - heartburn, acid reflux, asthma, migraines, headaches, etc. - and it all turned out to be a dairy/gluten allergy. Yeah the foods you can eat are limited, but feeling better is worth the price!

Had it all my life, though I didn't know that's what it was when I was little. I never thought it had anything to do with age but when I visited my sister-in-law she thought I was making it up because "17-year-olds dont get heartburn."

You might have a hernia. Might want to get that checked. Also, try Prevacid and see if that helps.

I used to get it. Usually I would take Tums or some other antacid which were hit-n-miss as far being effective. For other reasons I began taking a vitamin supplement referred to as coral calcium. That put an end to my heartburn.

Hey guys, I have never had heartburn up until about a week ago. Last time I ate a whole bunch of pancakes and had heartburn for hours. Yesterday, I had some other stuff and about an hour later, lots of heartburn. I know tums and other similar products are recommended but I want to stay away from medicine.

Have any of you developed heartburn as you got older? Or is it something more than that?

I used to get it really bad, it started when I was about 22 and was caused by spicy food and drinking lager. I switched to guinness and it became a lot better but I still suffered for a year or 2. I haven't changed anything since and now it is a once every 1 or 2 years thing usually brought on by really spicy food.

I guess what I am trying to say is don't worry if it carries on for a while after you make some changes to your diet, it can take a while to clear up. That said I really wouldn't worry about "medication" such as tums/rennie/gaviscon as I have yet to have an issue with any of them and it really isn't like taking an opiate or similar.

oh i believe it. then i read stoms stuff that apple cider vinegar is just very good for you and it's not a bad idea to have it a few times a week.

When you fry meats, deglaze your pan with a little bit. It adds a great flavor to chicken and pork.

I'm 25 and began to get heartburn for the first time this year, sporadically. Also, I hate to admit it but I'm pretty sure my eyesight is not 100% of what it used to be, I think.
