anyone familiar with Best Buy's laptop warranties?

I'm thinking about selling off my PC and getting a decent laptop from Best Buy. Anyone familiar with their warranties, and if they're any good?

It seems like a lot of people hate Best Buy...I've never had any problems, it's just a store. Anyone work there or care to comment?

nah, its a Gateway model I really like. On sale for like $1250 this week. Laptops are a bit more iffy in the repair department tho, since everything is integrated. I don't know how much BB's warranties cost tho, but I'd imagine they're $200+.

My friend bought a lappy from BB back in HS (circa 99). Went back for warranty service. He didn't get it back until about 3 months later. They just ended up giving him a new laptop. Who knows what happened to his.

I work at Staples on Saturdays and we have semi-decent laptop warranties. It's like $200 or $300 for a couple years, which is a lot to me, but compared to their cost to repair if you don't, it's pretty cheap. Just for doing LCD repair it's something crazy like $650 - you could buy a new laptop for that.

not interested in dell laptops. the Gateway is just an Arima ODM, basically the next eMachines m68xx model (Gateway owns eMachines now). For $1250...

Eh. I bought a replacement LCD for my gf's dell off of ebay. I think it was $100 (bare panel).

dang, $249.99 for a 3-year warranty. The laptop includes a 1 year parts & labor warranty. 3 years is nice but $250 is a lot of $$ for me right now (yay for college budgets). I dunno. I'm pretty careful with my stuff. I know BB is good about returns for the first month or whatever - my bro bought a Compaq that had dead pixels and returned it a week or two later and got a new one, no problems.

Definately no on the Compaq, eh on the Dell, and the IBM is just too pricey. I love IBMs, used to have a Thinkpad. The trackpoint owns, I hate touchpads lol. But my mind is made up, I'm in love with the Gateway. I'm going to stop in the store tomorrow and take a look at it. I haven't seen the new ultrabrite screen or whatever it is, just the regular eMachines version. That will be the make or break.

Why definitely no on the Compaq? It's little more than a rebadged HP and my HP has been hands down the best laptop I've ever had personal experience with.

The HP/Compaq merger has had a positive effect on the quality of Compaq laptops. THe same cannot be said for Gateway/eMachines. I worked for Gateway for a short time last year and when I did, their laptops were well built. This new crop that has been coming out since they bought eMachines is crap.

Nothing in the same range as the Gateway will be offered most likely. If it is...price match!
