on Jan. 2nd i accidently was in the wrong lane going through the tollbooth and didn't pay the toll.
it was the easy pass lane or whatever it's called, and i was supposed to go through the automatic lane.
so i'm assuming that my picture was taken and i'll be fined.
i'm curious how much it is?

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Tons of people do this. My fiance's grandparents were so surprised that tolls were "optional" last time they visited IL. Turns out that they just went thru the I-Pass lane. My parent's have been boxed in between semi's and unable to move over to another lane and have never received a ticket. Only if you do this every day will they send you a ticket in the mail.

I have heard that a once or twice isn't a big deal, but they'll let a guy do it "free" for a month and then send him like $1500 ticket.

Unless you are a repeat offended you don't need to worry about it. But if you go to the illinois tollway website, you can send them in your $1 or whatever it was for your toll and it doesn't matter. Of course IL has the worst roads around and they just DOUBLED all the tolls so they can make evne more money they aren't going to spend on the roads. Stupid state.

illinois only doubled the tolls for non ipass users

when did it happen? as of jan 1 they've been enforcing the tolls considerably more than they have been

I did exactly what you did once. It was an totally an accident, but I got no mail about it and no fine.
I did this once before, the I-Pass only lane on the offramp was on the right instead of the left (where it normally is on the open road) and I never got a ticket or anything.

No, IL roads aren't bad at all. If you want to see bad, drive in Kentucky. When I was driving up from TN two weeks ago (2 days after a snowstorm), I almost assrammed the guy in front of me because the two cars in front of him lost control since we were on a huge ice patch on the highway. And this was right across from the TN-KY border. I continued to hit ice patches every ten minutes while I was in KY. Cross over to IL, everything became better. Encountered no ice patches or snow on the highway the entire drive up to Chicago. Those Kentuckians need to get their act together and shovel/salt their damn highways.

Only two seasons in Chicago--winter and construction. 🙂

But seriously, we have bad traffic, but the roads in general are taken care of, especially in the winter. I've only had one "incident" due to road conditions and that was at like 8:30 am on a Saturday morning on a stretch of I-57, just a few hours after a pretty heavy snow storm. Luckily there was no one else on the road to hit at the time.

You must not have been to many states. I just drove from Chicago to LA this last week, and there were some *awful* roads along the way. IL roads are definately very well maintained.

I do have to say though, New Mexico has *the best* roads in the nation, possibly the world. Every road we were on seemed like it was brand new... clean as a whistle.. had a nice reddish tint, fresh paint, no litter... it was a dream. It really surprises me how *clean* they all were, especially in Albuquerque... there was literally NO dirt anywhere.... the one big interchange on the west side of the city was like some sort of utopian society's idea of what roads should be like.

heh, Ohio is lowering the tolls on the Turnpike for large Trucks to try and keep them on the turnpike rather than using other highways, like 422 which runs near my house and turns into a 2 lane road a fwe miles past my house, and trucks use it all the time as an alternative to the Turnpike.

i think ill like lower tolls.

Exactly, except it isn't $1500.

And BTW... the toll's aren't doubling in order to increase revenue, they are doubling to encourage people to get I-Passes, which are sticking with the $.40 cent tolls, in order to decrease conjestion at toll booths. This is a great plan and I am happy that they are implementing it.

I-Pass? Can you use Ez-pass if you're travelling in that area, or are they not on the same system, or just taking years like the lame...er I mean Maine turnpike to be Ez-pass compatible?

Doubt it... I think each state is seperate. Never herad of intercompatibility

i totally agree

if i traveled the tollway more than 4 or 5 times per year, i'd invest in an ipass for sure (50 initial investment)

I can use a New York Ez-Pass in NJ, PA, and MA. Also NH, and ME are supposed to go online some time this year. I just looked on wikipedia to see about NH and Me and apparenetly a crapload of authorities accept ezpass:

The following agencies accept E-ZPass at their toll facilities:

Massachusetts Turnpike
Massachusetts Port Authority
New York State Thruway Authority
Peace Bridge Authority
New York State Bridge Authority
MTA Bridges & Tunnels
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
New Jersey Turnpike Authority (includes Garden State Parkway)
Atlantic City Expressway
Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission
Burlington County Bridge Commission
Delaware River Port Authority
Pennsylvania Turnpike
Delaware River and Bay Authority
Delaware Department of Transportation
Maryland Transportation Authority
West Virginia Turnpike
Virginia Department of Transportation
Dulles Greenway

The following agencies will be included in the E-ZPass system by the end of 2005:
Maine Turnpike Authority
New Hampshire Turnpike (update (http://www.state.nh.us/dot/tur...pdf/EZPassUpdate.pdf))
Illinois Tollway
Richmond (VA) Metropolitan Authority
Pocahontas Parkway Association

This is good seeing as my job can send me to the strangest places from time to time.
