What do you think of it? Was it worth it for the decent pay and the tuition reimbursement? I don't think I would mind the workout... I workout as it is.

I've never had any problem with my UPS packages.

I work with a guy now who was a package handler at the hub here.
He said its hot, they are on your ass to get the packages sorted, and most packages are treated like a football.

Probably true, but if they are paying you by the hour, I guess they want their money's worth. It's not a really high-skill job, so I figure they normally have plenty of applicants.
UPS is a Union job, no?

It's a good job with decent pay and a good work out if you're young and need $.

I did it as a temp for about 2 months, VERY HOT DURING THE SUMMER TIME!

What Big Spender said

You'll get your @$$ in shape fast. I dropped at least 3-5% body fat working there in 2 weeks. Vascularity was incredible. Just know that it's hot and it's hectic

Well, I've been with UPS for over 5 years now. Started off as a package handler, was a part-time supervisor for 1.5 years and since Feb 2000 have a full-time IT Tech position. I love the company, pay and benefits are top notch. UPS is big on promoting from within so there are always opportunities. It's a hard, physical work to sort packages but if you're willing to invest time and work hard, you will advance quickly. I highly recommend it.

As for the crappers talking about UPS employees playing football with packages, grow up already. Damages do occur, but mostly due to accidents. If someone dilebaretly mishandles the package, well I personally fired 3 people jusst for that reason. If UPS mistreated all the packages, how could they stay in business for over 95 years and constantly rank as No 1 carrier in USA? And if you think FedEx or USPS babies your packages, I've got a news for you... Nuff said..

My brother in law works with UPS as a driver. He hates it and says he gets his balls busted constantly to get more done and they add to his route constantly. It doesn't help that he uses the union quite often in that they are forever having to fight for his job because he says what most only think. He also says that they don't promote as quickly as they used to, and that package handlers can now expect to be in that position for at least 3-5 years in most cases, whereas it only used to be about a year or two before promotion. I did it for a couple of weeks and hated it. They ride you like a racehorse and almost exclusively hire from temp services now to start, and then they hire you part time from there.

So as a handler, are you required to move so many packages an hour or something? Or is it more like-just work your hardest?

Thanks for your insight:) I was expecting a bunch of thread crappers ... it seems to be the poplar thing to do at ATOT:disgust:

How long did it take you to get promoted from a packager to something else? I have a feeling that most people at UPS don't stay more than six months.

What does you brother drive? A van? If so, he already should be greatful, the waiting list for one of those positions (in Louisville, KY) is over 10 years long. He makes darn good money and given excellent benefits and gripes about his work? No wonder he won't get promoted. Also, keep in mind that he's in the union and by contract, UPS may not take him out of union position with out Teamster's approval, and Teamsters are not crazy about loosing their dues money.

It depends on the job. Here in Louisville we sort appx 700,000 packages a night and addition 250-400,000 during the day, so it can get pretty hectic. I will tell you one thing for sure, being here all these years and seeing literally hundreds of people come and go, the people that bitch most, are the one's the like to work least.

I ask because I would love to move to a company that has room to move within as my current job has no future. However, I can't afford to get a job with, say, UPS and then be fired a week or 2 later b/c I "don't work fast enough"

EDIT: Also, what hours (M-F) do package handlers work? I would prefer to keep classes in mornings and work in evenings (I wish)

You're welcome :D And yes, crappers and crybabies are in abundant supply here, but hey.. What can you expect from immature teenagers?

On the subject of the job, I was promoted in 6 months. You will need to let your management team know that you're interested in promotion and they will coach you one-on-one.

How many hours a week do you work now? I would suggest trying UPS for couple of weeks (3-4 hours a night) without quitting you job before you make-up your mind.

Funny this should come up. I am about to be hired on by Fedex as a package handler. Little bit less pay than UPS, but no union dues and not as hectic.

Look at it this way... it's easier to find work when you're working.

If you don't like it just keep looking.
