I applied to their program and got this e-mail:

I hear you want to be a Mystery Guest. Let me tell you a little bit about
our Mystery Guest Position.

We're going to be hiring very soon in the San Jose/South Bay area. The
position pays $15.00 per hour. The job may require you to be available to
drive at least 100 to 150 miles each day that you are scheduled to work.
This position is part time. You may average approximately 5 to 12 hours a
week and may work at least one or two 5 to 6 hour shifts, along with a few
shorter ones. During these shifts, you will be evaluation at least 2 to 5
restaurants. This position is also temporary, lasting approximately 4 to 6
months. We do reimburse you for the food we ask you to buy and if you are
hired, you are paid for the time you leave your home for your reports until
you return home.

If you are hired, the paid training will be on July 10th and 11th from
about 10:00 AM to around 5pm on the 10th, and either 8am to noon or noon to
4pm on the 11th, depending on availability.

Now, let's hear about you.

Can you clear your calendar for both of these dates?
Do you have a computer with Internet access?
Are you available for a variety of different shifts throughout the week?
Do you eat at fast food restaurants regularly?
Can you eat and drink all of Jack's food, including caffeinated
beverages, meat, lots of deep fried products and our yummy ice cream
shakes?

If you answered yes to ALL of these questions, then we want to talk to you!
Please email me as soon as possible, please include your phone number, the
best time to call.

Please also list scheduling availibilty, if you were to be hired. I hope
to hear from you soon.

Hmm, sounds like a fuun job..they'll be paying me to eat and all. However driving 100-150 miles a day seems a bit extreme, especially since it doesn't look like they'll reimburse me for gas. And plus will they be enforcing my 4-6 month stay, since I'll be leaving for college in about 3 months?

sounds like an interesting job, but I'm guessing the reason the position only lasts 4-6 months is because you'll be dead by then eating Jack every day.

I average about 130 miles/day making service calls. It's not as bad as it sounds. You aren't getting in your car, driving 75 miles, working and then driving 75 miles home. Your first call might be 30 miles, the second 25 etc. It adds up fast.

Actually, Jack in the Box is a little late on this issue.

I believed Wendys was the first to have these mystery shoppers.
Then McDonalds followed this lead and now its a hugh deal with McDonalds.

Its a nationwide thing as every McDoanlds get at least a mystery shop every month.
This person acts like a regular customer and ordered something from drive-thru and inside.
The grade us everything from Service, Service times, Cleanliness, Friendliness.
They only shop at certain times, 7-10am, 11:30-1:30pm and 5-7pm.

Let me tell you, Mcdonalds treat these Mystery shop scores as an important key to gauge your performance.
McDonalds goal is an 88% or higher on the shops but I think they are averaging around 84%
The franchise I work for takes it very seriously. We get a hugh bonus for good mystery shop.
Store manager gets an extra $250 for a score of 88%-94%, and $500 for 95% ++.
The Corppration has the annual conference where all store managers who gets 100% score get a chance at a CAR and other prizes.

Speaking of which I can't help but brag.
I got really lucky and got my first 100% and my bonus check this month was a whopping $1350.

It got me thinking, these mystery shoppers are just normal people and they don't get paid much.
What make them from revealing themselves and get some type of compensation ??

Let me just add that if you want to cause managers at McDonalds to go in a frenzy do this.

Go through drive-thru and order some type of value meal.....make yourself seen if theres a manager in drive thru.
Then wait about 5-10 mins and go inside with a stop watch and some type of notepad.
Make it look discret but yet let it be known that you're trying to be discret.
Also order a value meal.

As you sit down pretend you are writing down notes.
If the manager in drive-thru also see you inside, he will go nuts trying to clean the place in front of your eyes.

I have spotted 2 mystery shoppers so far and I go into a frenzy trying to make the store look good...still yet to get a 90%+ that way.

LOL, I think I'm revealing wayyyy to many secrets about McDonalds.

I work at Staples and I know we get Mystery Shopped once every month as well. Other stores such as BestBuy also get Mystery Shopped on a monthly basis. My managers make it a point to treat every customer as a mystery shopper - that way when we do encounter the mystery shopper, we are prepared.

The Business Machines department (the electronics/computers department) at my store received a score of 91% the other month. The goal was 80% if I remember correctly. So everyone in that department got a small bonus. We are also evaluated in other departments and as a store in general. The store in general did dandy so I got a small bonus there too.

By the way, 150 miles seems to cover the local region. It's not that bad because like someone said, those 20 - 30 mile trips add up.

Definately go gor it although I don't know you would get picked or not.
The Mystery shoppers I've spotted are around 40-60 yr old..
I don't know what their stance are on younger folks.

LOL, if Walmart does this then they are in trouble.
They got 40 lanes but always have like 5-6 openned at the worst time.
When I first got my own store, I started at a Walmart McDs and I observed alot of things.
Like loooongggggg lines all the times.

my roommate is a mystery guest for qdoba, but it isnt a full time job. They just mail him meal vouchers, and he goes in, fills out the evaluation forms, and mails em back to the headquarters... Its actually pretty cool, he gets tons of free meals for just filling out a form

I boycotted Jack in the Box back in the e.coli days when kids were dying in Washington State.
Jack in the Box offered no support financially or otherwise untill the lawsuits were settled and they finally admitted they were at fault.

Soon after that they did a huge marketing campaign to get there business back (which worked), but I have not, nor will not eat at Jack in the Box ever again.

Actually it didn't work.
Jack in the Box was once the #3 fast food burger joint in the US and after that incident, they are next to nothing now.
Mostly in the west coast.

They are not asking you to actually eat a whole meal 2-5 times a day.
They are asking you to shop these stores 2-5 times a day.
This include evaluating service time, friendliness, food quality, cleanliness, etc...
You just have to try a little of any of the stuff you ordered and check for quality but not neccessary consume the whole meal, unless you want to.

I think the training includes what you need to look for when doing these shops.
