Well I would just replace the stereo but on some new cars the radio is the control center for the entire car and computer, so replacing that would screw me out of a lot of features.
I used to use a tape adaptor for my Archos Jukebox, the quality wasn't too bad but then again you have at least 4 variables so it's difficult to judge quality:
- Quality of speakers
- Quality of head unit
- Quality of adaptor
- Quality of input device
Your stereo controls other electronics in the car? weird!....I mean my dads stereo is linked into a secondary display on the top of the dash and if you changed it that would stop functioning but that's about it.
I have seen that most modern stereos you can have troubles wiring in things like satellite navigation though...
