I don't know anything about Xanax as I have never used it, but you may want to ask your DR about Soma. I have only used it a few times, but I find that it makes me comfortably tired and has little to no side effects with limited use. It is classified as both a muscle relaxant and a sedative. Soma is the generic name for carisoprodol.

Carisoprodol is actually one of the older tranquilizer/muscle relaxent type drugs out there. From what I understand it's not prescribed too often that much any more, once diazepam (Valium) was discovered benzos pretty well took over.

Soma is actually an odd drug for me, while the benzo type drugs really don't do much for me (at least not the few I've tried), Soma knocks me on my ass. Benzo's are genreally considered safer, that's why you'll see them prescribed more, why they've replaced drugs like Soma and the barbituates.

Xanax is a great drug to quickly knock out anxiety, but be careful about using it too much. It is highly addictive and has nasty side effects plus withdrawal can be life threatening.

But just taking a few pills to get over some temporary anxiety, or rarely to stop panic attacks, is not too bad. Daily use is what leads to addiction.

am currently on soma and a barbituate....and have been on soma for quite some time. i personally like the older meds, the ones that have a lot of research under their belt.

to me they work completely different when compared to xanax/valium.

From what I know Fioricet is the only drug that has a barb in it that is still prescibed fairly often. Soma works pretty well for me personally, but Valium is a better muscle relaxer (again, for me personally - I have some very degraded discs in my back and sometimes get very bad muscle spasms). And you have to remember, all of the drugs we are talking about here are pretty much 'older'. I think Valium came on the market in the 60's, it's known to be safe. But each person is different, that's why it's nice that as newer drugs come to market the older ones are available if someone responds to those drugs better.

The problem with barbs is that as your tolerance to their effects rises, your tolerance to a deadly overdose does not rise as quickly. So people will take a higher and higher dose to get the same effect, but eventually they'll hit a dose that kills them. On the other hand, a drug like Valium would be very difficult to overdose on, almost impossible (I'm talking about by itself, once you mix other downers like opiates, alcohol, then saftey goes out the window). I believe barbituates basically activate a GABA receptor, benzos just open them longer to your bodies natural GABA... somehow that ends up being much safter for you.

One of the interesting things about Soma is that it's not a controlled substance in most states, yet it's active metabolite is a controlled substance. Seeing that it's not a controlled substance it's actually very easy to find online and get 100% legally.

for me, the med is acetaminophen + butalbital supposedly w/ little or no caffeine. it works wonders for tension headaches and tension headaches alone. like you i have a lot of disc/back issues along w/ neck/shoulder/back muscle spasms. i was not aware that soma wasn't controlled, but all my meds come from two docs, both of which have a full list of all the meds i take - don't hide anything from any doc and never add alcohol into the mix.

Every so often I take it as a rec drug. It just chills me out, nothing too crazy.

A couple months back I took a bar and went out drinking, BAD IDEA. I now have a scar on my chin and my right knee will never be 100% on a night I dont remember.

It is weird though, I can take stuff like xanax and what not and just not do it for a long time. However I have had family members that have had some real drug issues (a close cousin is really bad with xanax).

Yeah mixing booze with any type of sedative isn't good, especially if you are going out. Worst I ever did was mix a bottle of wine or more with dimenhydrinate.

I can remember some alcoholic street druggies from back when I worked in 711. One night, wasn't there myself but employees witnessed it, a street guy came in pissed out of his mind and high. He wandered about then tripped on something and split the side of his forehead open on the metal racks. He was bleeding everywhere! Thing is he didn't feel a god damn thing. Just got on his feet all wobbly and tried to keep going.

That's Fioricet... tylenol, caffeine, and the barb. There is also a related one with some codeine also.

Soma isn't scheduled at the federal level, but some states do schedule it as it is very much able to be abused. Soma is a prodrug, it is metabolized in your body into a different drug, that chemical is the one responsible for the effects. That metabolite is a scheduled substance, but somehow Soma is not at the federal level.
