I don't like to fly, but tomorrow I'm going to try it. I'll be flying alone, which will make matters worse I guess, but all well. Anyway, my doctor prescribed me xanax and said to take it one hour before the flight. I've never taken xanax before, so I was wondering if I should try it today just to see how it affects me? Also, should I bring it with me on the plane and only take it if I need it (I'll most likely be having an anxiety attack until we're in the air, but after that, I'll be fine). How fast does it work?

Takes anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to kick in. Just take it an hour or so before the flight and you'll be fine.

I had to take it for anxiety attacks and it just calmed me down and made me sleepy at times.

Ok, so probably no need to "test it" - just take it on my way to the airport tomorrow?

What's the mg or color? If it's your first time prescribed it I would imagine they are .5mg and would be yellow or peach color. Those might not do that much depending on your size and tolerance. If they are 1mg and blue colored and you've never taken one before I imagine you would get pretty disoriented off it so you might want to wait until you are in the gate waiting for your flight. The 2mg white ones commonly referred to as bars would have you snoozing your entire flight and probably wouldn't even remember it.

Any benzo drugs are pretty addictive, so I'm not for you testing one today personally. It will also greatly diminish the effects of the dose you take tomorrow because it will take more to achieve the same effect.

Benzo's don't do much for me personally... maybe make me a little tired. Some people love them as a recreational drug. Some people get a huge medical benefit out of them for sleep/anxiety/anger issues. They seem to affect everyone a little differently. But, if you're afraid to fly, most likely it'll take the edge off, maybe even let you sleep through the trip.

Takes about 15mins for me to first feel the affects, and about an hour before it knocks me out.

For me, Xanax is nearly like taking Ambien...just knocks my ass out until the next day. Valium works better to make me relaxed without putting me to sleep. Of course, it all depends on the dosage.

Xanax can be taken right at the moment you're having anxiety or preemptively; my doctor recommends I do the latter, as once I'm in a full-blown panic attack it usually takes more than the minimum .25mg I'm prescribed to get me back in line. If I feel one coming on I eat a pill.

For me it works very quickly and I only take it when I need it as it tends to make me really sleepy.

As for taking it today to see how it works, it's up to you. Benzos are highly addictive so my suggestion is don't take it unless you need it, but they're your drugs.

My ex-wife used to take those. All I know is that when she stopped taking them the crazy came out all over the place.

oh oh, xanax. Reminds me of the time an insanely hot ex-friend of mine.. looks like britney spears meets uma thurman.. she threatened to down a bottle of the stuff, so I met her for coffee and took her home.. Only, I felt completely guilty about thinking of taking advantage of her, and had absolutely no chance anyways, so instead of it turning into an skinemax movie, it was probably the most pathetic 72 hours of my life.. .. She was a complete mess we went to the zoo to cheer her up and she walked around barefoot and.. she blogged about me having the physique of a nyc cab driver, after I spent the weekend nursing her and.. what was my point again?

My doctor prescribed Alprazolam (Xanax generic) .25mg for when I have trouble sleeping. I have a high pressure job, been on manditory overtime since last February, and I have problems shutting my brain off at night (getting work out of my head in the quietness of night). My doctor also told me I could take up to 4 .25mg tablets when sleeping is really difficult. Before the Alprazolam, the doctor prescribed Ambien. Let me tell you, that shit is bad. Besides leaving me groggy the next day, my wife said I'd get up in the middle of the night and do some really stupid stuff that I have no memory of. One such episode I woke up around 2 am, got in her car, opened the garage door and tried to leave. Well, I didn't get very far because I had parked my Trailblaser outside the garage and behind her car. She woke up when she heard the crunch and the tires squealing as I was trying to push the parked trailblazer out of the way with her car. I don't remember any of it, but we had two crunched bumpers I had to have repaired.

Anyway, for me, Alprazolam doesn't make me drowsey unless I take more than .5mg, and it usually just calms me down a bit.

I mean this with much respect - I have the same issue, I'm so stressed out that I can't turn off at night, my brain is on hyper drive and I'm uptight during my personal time.. I tried things but the safest solution? Marijuana.

It may be the safer solution for you, but my employer does drug screenings, and I'd rather not lose my job in this economy. If something shows up on a drug test, at least I'll have a prescription to back me up. Besides, the Alprazolam is doing what I need it to do.

I won't argue with you, but marijuana is physically safer than prescription meds. Quit your job and move to California ;)

I have the same problem, but I can get fired for THC... so no dice.

:(

Valerian and st. john's wort helped me (valerian works fairly right away, st. johns you need to take as a supplement). But nothing approaches the effectiveness of MJ- in fact, i was having awful migraines and restlessness, smoked (after not smoking for a few weeks because I felt some guilt) and immediately thought "I got rid of my migraine and 'fun time' is the only real side effect? I love pot!"

Oh, I'm not arguing with you either, I just won't go the illegal route. As a matter of fact, a few months ago I read a statistic on the FDA website which was kind of shocking. Within 5 years half of the prescription drugs on the market today will be pulled from the market because of dangerous side effects. Doesn't it make you feel like a guinea pig?
