I keep my bills and important mail in an empty 5.25" slot on my computer. Does anyone know where I can find an actual fitting open tray that I can mount in the slot? Has anyone ever seen one?

Thanks,
Frank

I had one that was designed to make an additional floppy fit in a 5" bay but I cn't recall where I got it from. It's in a junk box somewhere now.....

Keep looking, it's out there.

Gut a busted cdrom.

I have 2 I was going to use for fanbus, but went water instead. They would be easy to mod into what you want.
A drawer modded into a 5.25" bay would be a pretty kewl mod. It would be really cool if it had CD holders that stood up when you opened it, and it could hold about 25CDs. That would be a nice way to travel to a lan party with your games.

I had a couple of CDROM disc holders that fit into a single 5¼" drive bay. The discs were attached to tiny trays which slid horizontally into the bay. I think I got mine at PIMFG.com.

This may have been what Gravity was referring to in his post. Scroll to the bottom of the page -- it's the next-to-the-last item on the page. You could cover the holes in the bottom of the tray rather easily with some thin cardboard or whatever.

You might have to enlarge the front opening by cutting it a bit with a Dremel or something, but that probably wouldn't take more than a few minutes. Stranger things have been done to computers! :D

Next you'll start thinking about putting a postage meter in another empty 5.25" bay.

Uh oh .... :Q

Some nice stuff there but I'm after a nice, neat appearing opening. Funny thing, while I was searching for one this evening I ran into THIS and couldn't stop laughing. A combination cup holder and cigarette lighter that fits into a 5.25" drive bay !! Had to have it ....

Yeah, well I'm a little more open minded than you. Not only did I think that the cup holder function was hilarious, I can use the 12v lighter plug-in to now test all my automotive gadgets and players that I previously had to go out to the car to test. It's (the 12v lighter) a good function to have handy and the cup holder will get some good chuckles from the crew around here.

That's a new twist on the old PC tech support story: "Help I broke my cup holder (actually the CD ROM drive tray) off."
. Be careful - on a fairly loaded system you may not have a lot of Amps left on the 12V rail to play with...

Seriously though, you could mod one of these Cheap HD Mobile Rack for your storage tray. I was just thinking that a dummy one of these would make a good hidey-hole for valuables and then I realized that a thief that had the time would probably take the whole PC...

Any theif that tries to snatch up my rig real quick-like is liable to be on the floor with a back problem. I guess there's something to be said for a big steel case and water-cooling.
