Anyone ever received "unclaimed property" from the state?

So my aunt sends me an email with a screenshot of the Illinois Treasurer's website "Illinois Lost and Found" with a search done in my name. There are two results for unclaimed property, one between $10-100, and one over $100. But that's all the information it gives you. You have to make a written, notarized request for it.

I can't imagine what these could possibly be. I'm pretty on top of things when it comes to money being owed to me. Anybody have any luck retrieving a significant amount from their state? Where did the money end up coming from?

We once had to make a claim to the state of New York to reclaim some IBM shares that we didn't know we had. When I was an employee of IBM I was on the employee stock purchase plan and was getting certificates for 10 or 20 shares every couple of months. After I left IBM I thought we had sold all of our shares to buy a house, but many years later found another certificate for 15 shares in our safety deposit box. Because we had moved a few times, and IBM started getting mail returned from our address on record, the shares became property of the state of New York (IBM HQ is in NY).

After a little research and filing the necessary paperwork we got the shares back, including the fact that the shares had split twice, so we received 60 shares. That was a very welcome $7,000 find!! It took about 6 months to actually receive the shares once we made the filing.

Oh snap, I have 2 of those from previous addresses as well, thanks!

No problem! I'll PM you my paypal address so you can send me a finder's fee 😀

I have 10 bucks on there, its wasnt worth it to me to send my SSN and drivers license to a random fax number to retrieve

My daughter, who's in her 20's now, found her name on the list of some random state. Turns out that a relative opened a bank account for her when she was born and never told us about it - wanted it to be a surprise. It was!
