Anyone ever rebuilt an automatic transmission?

It looks easier than a 5 speed from the manual actually, since everything is hydrolic and there are a lot less gears in it. I dunno though cause I never actually tried it before :). Has anyone done this? I'm curious as to how difficult it is and how long it takes. The specific transmission in question is a 1974 Ford C6.

I thought an auto would be tougher to rebuild...more seals, gaskets, and clutches and such... I'm more intimidated by an auto than I am a standard...it's all gears :D

I've done this, with both passenger and commercial automatic transmissions for class projects. The C6 is quite an easy transmission to rebuild (at least in my opinion). Just take your time, and if you have a manual, follow every step to the detail. G'luck :D

I have a Haynes Ford Aotumatic Transmission Overhaul book that covers the C3, C4, C5, C6, and AOD. It seems pretty detailed. Shouldn't be too bad then? Do I have to get any machine work done?

Anyone? I do believe it's been done in the past, but most definitely not by me :)

I'm around the "replacing the starter" level of competency.

Very very very few times. Like twice. I hate it. I would rather pay $ to have someone else do it, or buy a rebuilt one.

I've done a C6 for my 68 XL

Not too bad if you have a good book and the tools, and space

Also important to keep things CLEAN

I highly recommend at least a shift improver kit also.

I won't either.

Everything must fit exactly in a very tight space and quite often there is only one way and one exact order to put each part in. If you are extraordinarily patient and have lots of time and a good book along with the right tools - I'd still say 'no' - for the first timer - unless you have access to someone experienced in tranny rebuilding to help.

I rebuilt a mopar 904 once and a old c4 once, this was 20 years ago.
I would saw a manual is easier to rebuild but not always cheaper, hard parts in a manual are exspensive.

for the C6 you may need special tools, unsure, one thing for sure is you need a good set of snap ring pliers, and a can of vasiline, and clean work area

oh, rebuilding automatics is super easy. i rebuild the one in my honda about 4 or 5 times a week, just before i brush my teeth and go to bed. sometimes i even do it two or three times a day, just for the heck of it.

I helped do a fwd gm 4 speed auto once and it wasn't too bad but we were in an autoshop class and had all the extra tools and a teacher to help out :). I plan to do the 3 speed auto in my turbo caravan here pretty soon and it looks a lot easier .

Well, the tranny I'd be rebuilding isn't a 5 speed electronic thing or anything. It's a 3 speed designed in 1966, so it's probably a bit less complex than some (hopefully :)).
