Anyone ever opened up a LaCie HD enclosure?

Nice F.A. Porsche enclosure. Haven't opened it up, but I don't think there's a fan inside (can't hear one either). 2 short rows of vents on the bottom. I love mine =)

It is definitely gorgeous.....but I was worried about metal-on-metal fins and such inside.

I 've had some store-bought externals drives and enclosures as well, that were compelte garbage in terms of cooling

Unfortunately, I've heard way too many horror stories about Lacie external hard disk failures to feel confident using one myself. Failure is often attributed to excessive heat, but I have no hard data to back up that reason specifically.

Cheaper to build your own in my opinion. I have one that I made myself and compared with it's counterpart it is much louder than the LaCie. The only time the drives are on are when I need them, except for the few times I forget to turn them off.

I have a 160GB FW800 Lacie disk. It failed once near the end of the warranty, it's going back for the 3rd time now, they can't seem to get me a fully working non problmatic unit now.
