Anyone ever move to a big city alone?

A part of me has always wanted to live and work in a major city like LA or NY. I feel like after building up a few years of experience out of college, I would like to try to apply for a job in one of those two cities, and would possibly make the move even if i I had to do it alone. I've been to both cities, and while both seem exciting, I'm not sure if moving to one just for the idea of it is wise. Has anyone here ever done something similar? Did you regret it or love it?
 
It all depends on what you're looking for in that new life along with your personality...and LA and New York couldn't be more different in terms of cities, so that's a big spread there.
 
Yeah, I've done several times.

Big cities I've moved to by myself:

London
Berlin
Paris
Miami
NYC

You'll meet people at work, or where you live, or hobbies etc.

Not all big cities are great, depends on the city and you. I'm not sure how you can know in advance of actually moving there; visiting may help a bit but is different than actually living there.

I moved to a "big city" all alone... from a town of 12,000 to a city of ~100-200,000. After a year the only people I know are those from work. 'Course I'm pretty much a loner anyway but it kinda sucks.
 
I like living in a "big city". Of course Milan is not like LA or NY, but is 1,3000,000 people. I used to live in a small town, 16,000 people, so it made a very big difference!
Now I live on my own, in my house (I bought it, the mortgage is cheaper than the rent!!) and I enjoy the night life here... I can go out, have a beer and get home by metro. No need to drive home, I can drink as much as I like, I have a lot of choice for clubs, pubs... there's a lot of gals downtown.
I moved here because it's easier to find jobs, and you don't have to spend hours into a train or driving to get to work.
If I were you I'd try. I've never been to the USA, so I don't know what's the best big city... but go, don't esitate! 🙂
 
Plenty of people do it every year. Its not that hard, I moved to PHX 6 months ago and already have a good group of friends. Its only tough meeting the initial group, after that you meet their friends, friends of friends, etc...

Do you like it out there? I'm thinking about moving to the Tempe area in a year or two..
 
I would not mind it if I was able to walk to work. But if I had to drive 2 hours forget about it. I prefer a small city where I live now.

In fact, I'd go in a even smaller city in a heart beat if it was near here (where family is) and that I had a good secure job. Houses get really cheap in the <5k cities.

I live in Tempe, just near the border of Scottsdale/Phoenix and I walk to work. 😀 I have a pretty unique situation though, so I'm very thankful for it. I walk twice a week and it's a great way to get the blood flowing in the morning so I'm not so groggy stumbling through the door.

I've been an Edmontonian (or right nearby) all my life, & while i don't hate it here, after visiting Vancouver for a week just recently, i wanna move there.

I already know i'd love it there...i'd just have to make the decision to do it.
Not so easy even if there are a couple people i know there encouraging me to move there....

How is Victoria? Have you been there? I would prefer a smaller city than Vancouver. I live in Guelph now for school and find it's a good size. It's larger than Victoria though.

Also, I hear Victoria gets 1/2 the rain of Vancouver, which is a plus. Vancouver does look like a beautiful city though.

when i move, first thing i'm gonna do after getting settled is join any and all local sports/whatever things i can, so i know that i have something to do at least 3 days a week 😛

(karate, soccer, and ballroom dancing class sound good)

What made it a bad decision? Social life? Missing family/old friends?

I know LA and NY are two very different places. I am a northeast guy and NY is my true top choice. I just like LA due to the weather, but I'm not sure I would completely fit in around there.
 
Im moving from a town of ~2500 to Tulsa, with ~900k in the metro area, where I know few people outside of a few cousins I don't talk to much

I've never been to NY but LA has so many different kinds of people, you're bound to fit it. Just hit the hot spots or places you like to meet people and you're set.
