my company might be opening a new office in hong kong sometime by the end of 2006.

the question is, should I start dropping hints about how I'd love to transfer out there?

it seems kinda cool and I don't really have too much keeping me in the states, but what's HK like?

you can probably see everything worthwhile in a week or less.

great food, cheap pirated goods, and Chinese people with British accents.

EDIT: also, it's kinda dirty - your white t-shirt will be a grayish color by 5pm.

Hong Kong is great if you speak Cantonese or Mandarin, any other dialect of Chinese is rarer.
Very hot in the summer, AC is your lifeline in the summer. No AC = No go.
The harbour looks pretty good.
Most likely, you'll never be bored if you're there. Lots of places to roam, lots of new people to meet.

Most of all, it's easier when you know the language. :)

Cost of living is pretty high there i think. Make sure you wont end up taking a relative pay cut to live there

My fiancee's parents are from there, as far as I know they loved it. She still has lots of family over there, I honestly can't wait to visit.

hong kong, like any other big cities/tourist area, its a great place to visit, but you don't want to live there. I was born there too..what kind of stuff does your company do? they might not need to transfer you, they could hire someone there for a lot less than what you make. ;)

hong kong is very beautiful but might not exactly be the ebst place to live. its probably the most beautiful harbor in the world but the lifestyle might be too fast-paced for most people. im talking new york city type of life. wayyyyyyyyy urban. then theres the issue of speaking cantonese. and its ULTRA-expensive.

all in all its a very awesome place to visit/be. awesome tech/upclass but you have to be able to handle the super-hectic lifestyle.

yeah, that's the rumor going been around the office since the announcement :(

instead of a full-fledged, 24/7-staffed noc they might just open up a small collocation facility with one or two local IT guys just on-call, and see from there whether or not there's any point in expanding the facility to be comparable to our US and EU nocs.

so I'm back to square one :p

hot and humid in the summer

fantastic food at all price ranges - there are some really good bakeries and dessert shops. there's even a nice dessert buffet (Tiffin)

very convenient subway system (at least in the kowloon/hk island area, afaik)

nice & cheap clothes!

the subways and *some* stores use smart cards - i like not having to fish for coins at the local convenience stores

the quality of the chicks really varies, imo.

Sometimes you'll see all these Filipino women sitting on the sidewalk having a picnic, it's very strange.

most equivalent correlation to our seas of spanish employed by the hotel/corp. office cleaning industries.

Good place to visit, tough to live and work. I just gave up after 3 years (8am to 10pm 7 days a week without a break), and went back to Australia.
