Anyone ever have this happen to them? ***POLIO INSIDE***

Went to Target last night (my favorite store by the way, no beef with them. Walmart can suck me though) and I bought my sick son some Robitussin Cold and Cough medicine.

Now granted, I know meth addicts and makers have screwed this up for everyone, to the point where some places keep the sh1t behind the counter. I also understand that they card you for this crap now. While I don't really care for that I don't like it either. But I am of the school of thought that my whining to the lady at the register isn't likely to change this policy or law.

However, I encountered something new last night. The lady took my ID and then took her UPC gun and scanned in the bar code on the back of my drivers licence.

First off, I didn't even know it was possible to scan those things. It looks more like a dot matrix 3d puzzle looking thing where you stare at it until you see a picture. The register beeped its approval though and she handed it back.

I asked her what she did, and she said "Oh, it just tells me your birthday.". To which I replied "Can't the eyes God gave you do the same thing?".

Now, I'm not a conspiracy theory loving, tin foil hat wearing kinda guy (at least not at this time of the year anyway), but I know they're recording my full information and not just my date of birth.

This is wrong for a few reasons. First off, I'm a responsible adult (for the most part), I think I know how often I need to buy cough syrup and i really don't need someone in my business like that tracking when, where and how I buy it.

Secondly, I know that there are a few rotten apples out there abusing this stuff but is it really to the point where we need to be treated like children when we purchase certain things?

I mean, what's next? Remember those certain fvcktards that bought a few boxcutters and hijacked a few airplanes? Do we start scanning ID's for box cutter purchases now as well???

I'm not a very political person (I think the corruption eats to the core of all parties and is irreparable. We need a new system, not new people per se) but when I see crap like this I get really worried about what sort of state we're headed towards.

On that note, I really would like to discuss this without it turning into a political flame fest.

Does anyone know if this is a new state law, federal law, or just an individual stores policy.

they WERE recording all of your info. Same reason that they record if you buy ephedra. There are limits of how many bottles a month you can buy, and if you exceed that limit then feds get involved. the limit is high, and so if you are buying over that anyways something is up

Yeah, I get that. But normally they just LOOK at your ID and you're on your way. What if I HAD to buy a second bottle tomorrow because I lost the first one or something......do they flag me? I mean, where's the line? I'm just curious since they want to watch me like that.

My license gets scanned all the time when I buy beer. The register really does just verify that your age is appropriate for the product.

Swiped or the bar code on the back scanned. Guess it transfers the same info either way, but I could really care less if they know how much freakin' beer I buy. And yes, I've had mine swiped for a beer purchase, didn't care then.

I have nothing constructive to say, except that it reminds me of Julianne Moore in Magnolia. She totally blows her lid when the pharmacist implies that the cancer drugs she's buying (for her husband) might be for 'partying'. That scene was awesome.

While I think its stupid to card someone for cough syrup, I dont see a problem with scanning your license.

Thats called having employees too stupid to card properly. So they setup the registers to force you to scan the ID for all items flagged as such in the system. So regardless if it is beer or cough syrup, the register forces the cashier to scan the card.

This just went into effect in my state (SC) at the beginning of October.

(D)(1) A retailer selling products containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine pursuant to subsection (A) shall require the purchaser to produce a government issued photo identification showing the date of birth of the person and require the purchaser to sign a written or electronic log showing the date and time of the transaction, the person?s name and address, and the amount of the compound, mixture, or preparation. The retailer shall determine that the name entered in the log corresponds to the name on the identification and that the date and time entered are correct and shall enter in the log the name of the product and the quantity sold. The log must include a notice to purchasers that entering false statements or misrepresentations in the logbook may subject the purchaser to criminal penalties. The retailer shall retain this log for two years after which the log may be destroyed. The log must be made available for inspection within twenty-four hours of a request made by a local, state, or federal law enforcement officer.

I bought some ephedrine the other day and had to sign a paper with my name and address on it. At the top of the paper it mentioned the maximum amount you are allowed to purchase within a month. I don't recall the number off hand but it would certainly take way more than 2 bottles of cough medicine to flag you. I think after I did the math in my head I would have to eat 4-5 ephedrine tabs a day in order to reach the limit. At that rate I think I'd be dead long before the feds would get the chance to investigate me. 😛

i think its an attempt to keep people from forging driver's licenses... on another note, here in florida, they revoked the ephedra ban, but I still get carded for Tylenol Cold and Sinus

Maybe it's a local law or a store policy but either way theres really not much choice left for you if you need/want that sort of product.

I recall a few months ago being sick as hell and went to Wal-Mart (closest place to me) to get some Sudafed Cold medicine and have to wait for nearly 15 mins because the pharmacist were to busy helping fill prescriptions to stop grab me my damn cold medicine and scan my ID. Just retarded and of course I felt like shyte in the first place.

BTW, CVS requires DLs to be scanned for ANY purchase requiring ID check. (Alcohol, tobacco and drugs)

The reasoning behind this is to take the clerk out of it, and make the sale impossible unless the computer scans a valid ID.

More than likely it's protection against fines and lawsuits.

I'm in SC. I didn't have to sign anything though. Although when I went to get my RX at Walgreens the other day I noticed that disclaimer taped to the CC signing machines and wondered WTF that was all about. Now I know.

The CVS we go to all the time takes your drivers license and manually copies down your name /address etc. into a log book.

I've been to a couple of Walgreens, while out of town, and they just run the magnetic strip... so who knows what they're keeping.

I can't wait till flu/cold season and I have to get my neighbors to buy medicine for us because we've used our allotment for the month. lol

Polio's in here? I'm gettin out...WTF???

J/K...I would have been more worried due to the fact that I'm 18...and in TN, they keep the crap behind the counter...

I also think it's so the store has an electronic verification that the clerk made sure the ID was presented. Otherwise it would be too easy for Bob The DMX Field to buy his gallon of Robitussin from his buddy at the drugstore and avoid that pesky ID problem.

What a trivial thing to complain about.

actually its worse then he talks about.

you are only allowed something like 2 box's a month. so if everyone in the house is sick and you have a baby, young adult and an adult someone is screwed.

the lady said right now you can just go to a difrent store. but the goverment is trying to get it linked with them all.
