Anyone ever have Tempered Glass spontaneously break?

I just woke up and noticed my sliding door tempered glass completely shattered but still intact in the frame. I don't see any evidence of an attempted break-in. Anyone have any insight? I will get pics up later.

Oh oh I see what you mean. The glass is broken but still in shape in the door frame. Ok I gotcha.

I didn't get what you were saying at first. 🙂

Have you looked for any rocks or heavy objects near the door? Maybe somebody wanted to be cute and throw a rock at your window. Some glass has a protective material in it to keep the glass in one piece even if it shattes. Most cars have front and rear windshields like this. Odds are it was a prank from some wanker with too much time on his hands.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck.

that happened to my car window last year in the summer. Only one window broke in the back. and it wasn't because someone tried breaking into it either, its a '91 Corolla..and it just happened out of nowwhere. The glass was still intact..just shattered with cracks webbing all over it.

I used to live next to a railroad. One time as a train was going by the glass in our screen door just exploded. I think the harmonics of all the wheels on the rail made it break.

It probably broke due to stress on the frame. Or maybe the temp was low at night and then heated up quickly and with the sun light it cracked???

it could've been a small piece of gravel that was kicked up by the train and flew at the glass.

It probably was heat, my windshield cracked straight down the middle. I have a black camry and live in sacramento. It was like a 95 that day and I forgot to roll down the windows. =(

Nope, the house was too far away, plus there was a steep bank between the tracks and the front of the house. The angle just wouldn't have worked. And there were no rocks around the wreckage.

yah, it's probably heat and stress. but tempered glass is supposed to be able to withstand such problems.

oh, we all know things expand and contract like normal.

the cracking thing can happen if your frame does not let the glass do so. this can happen if the glass was ATTACHED to the frame with some adhesive or whatever.

contact the manufacturer of your door.

also, if your door is old, it happens more often than you think.

Your really not going to see an impact point if it was tempered glass. Tempered glass turns to thousands of small pieces when broken. Your side windows on your car are tempered, the front and back are not, but are two sheets laminated with a plastic sheet between them. Sounds like your door wall was both tempered and laminated, that's called security glass. Yes stress could break it or just about anything really hard(think a stone, metal, etc.) hitting it just right. They make a small carbide ball with a hundred little projections that would break that glass with surprisingly little effort.

ok, now you all have just scared me....my scuba mask is tempered glass and it would not be good at all if it decided to shatter at 60-100ft🙁

I understand that this can happen during a storm when the pressure drops suddenly and all your windows are tightly closed. If it was real hot out you would also have the temperature drop quickly which would contribute to the problem.
